The worst thing that happened to my own ancestors was the Trail of Tears which took place in 1830. People also used the "miasma" idea of disease, which is indeed different from germ theory, but they still knew that something that was around a bunch of sick people would likely get people sick and that smallpox was something that killed a LOT of Natives. It was very much on purpose and it did happen.
