2025-03-16 06:48:06 +0000 UTCThe Office premiered when I was a green, new member in the workforce. The stuff brought up in the second episode was a real cultural thing at the time (2005?). Around that time, there were a lot of Millennials entering the workforce including myself who didn't really grow up with past generations mentality on some issues. In doing so, we experienced a lot of the old school, good O'l boy stuff from management that maintained the standard from a time that has passed. Like all good satires, the sexual harassment stuff shown here is taken to an extreme but also not too far off. I developed my own version of the Jim Halper stare in my office environment as an attempt to diffuse situations where the old heads were talking about something that was visibly uncomfortable for the surrounding people. A real strength of the episode was capturing the palpable uncomfortable atmosphere around Todd. IRL, that's a thing. Also, the sexual harassment video is not far off from what the average worker saw in the early 2000's. Those videos were fucking hilarious and came off as satire even when that wasn't the intent.
