"THE End" by the Doors.....one of the best bands if all time!!!

Elizabeth DeMerie

not that it matters but acid and LSD are the same thing. And yea for the bridge scene the lance actor was apparently off that and really tripping sack lol

Jeffery Bezos

I think in his roast, Charlie Talked about growing up playing with the fake severed heads on the set lol

Jeffery Bezos

that movie is a Ride

Jeffery Bezos

Please watch more all-time greats like this that challenge and entertain equally

Cameron

Never saw this movie before. Now the Major Payne scene makes sense and is even funnier.

D-Matrix

So... if I understand what you're saying at the very end there, it's War. Huh. Good God, y'all. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing. Seriously, though, this movie is simultaneously one of the greatest war movies ever made and one of the greatest anti-war movies ever made. Completely insane from start to finish, more a vibe than a story, but with the subject matter of it, that works.

Gruffydd

The Doors was the band playing. theres a good movie called The Doors (1991) starring val kilmer thats about the singer.

Kluneberg

A masterpiece of filmmaking. If you vibed with this, I think you'll love the Thin Red Line.

Hunter

I was born to 61. I watch this film a long time ago as a teenager. I remember seeing it on the big drive-in screen. It’s a very intense film. Martin Sheen really made a name for himself as an actor. I was also a fan of Marlon Brando. Leo, what a treat this is going to be for you. Martin Sheen has always been a brilliant actor. However, Marlon Brando as an actor, just raise the bar.

Michele Perez

Martin Sheen celebrated his 36 birthday on the set of Apocalypse now. Emilio Estevez was 17 at the time this movie was made and Charlie was only 14.

Michele Perez

That’s not Charlie Sheen. It’s Martin Sheen. This film was released in 1979. Charlie was only 14 years old at that time. A little trivia… Emilio Estévez is Charlie Sheen’s older brother by 3 years.

Michele Perez

It's Crazy because Martin Sheen was actually drunk in that beginning scene and Sam Bottoms, the dude who played Lance was tripping balls in some if not all the scenes he's in on acid or Lsd I can't remember but the filming of this was a shit show and just crazy within itself how it even actually got made!

Benjamin Herrera

I got the 3 movie version for my collection and I'm glad Reduxe was the first version I watched but I had been wanting to check out this one so this gave me am excuse too

Benjamin Herrera

The original was filmed like 30 minutes from my house where I usually go fishing 🎣

One last long post. It's just there's a lot to break down with this film. The music choices in this film are interesting and something I didn't catch until this watch through with Mr. Video. It started with "The End" by The Doors which gives us insight into Willard's mindset. That trippy song is showing him at his norm in "civilization" even if his normal state of mind is a broken human being. Willard understanding himself being a broken human in "civilization" set the standard for sanity within the film. As the film progresses and we see the boat crew travel deeper into the heart of darkness, the music becomes warped and distorted. There are no classical music type instruments and it's all synthesizers except for the "Ride of the Valkyries" scene. The more the crew advances along the river, the distortion of music becomes greater as the mental state of the crew breaks down seeing horror around them. The musical distortion and odd nature of the music adds to the increased uneasiness as the film progresses. That's mostly the music until Willard gets ready to take out Kurtz. "The End" starts playing again around 50:25 (in the youtube edit) as if he came to his senses and remembered his orders from "civilization". His duty from civilization to carry out abhorrent things is something that snapped him back into some level of normality.

Well said! As someone that does not comment often , I have noticed that with the older stuff , informative comments are on the rise. Actually trying to add to/inform Leo , and other folks that read these without trying to make any one feel stupid for not knowing something. I hope it continues along with more classic's. Peace

"The Star Wars music is crazy. I didn't expect to hear Star Wars music during any of these scenes in this movie" The music you're hearing in the scene is the "Ride of the Valkyries" theme from one of Richard Wagner's operas. In the context of the song, on winged horses Valkyries collect the souls of warriors and transport them to Valhalla. However, there's more to it than that in the scene. Wagner is considered one of the greatest composers in human history. However, Wagner was extremely antisemitic and his music has been used as propaganda by numerous hate groups including the Nazi's. Angry Austrian mustache man was inspired by some of Wagner's works and he used Wagner's music as propaganda for the Nazi party. Francis Ford Coppola's choice of music was brilliant in the scene as it's in line with the spirit of the original musical theme while also being blatantly clear how he felt about the Vietnam War. By the end of this film there's no mystery left in how he viewed the United States involvement in the Vietnam conflict.

Chaos T

Lovin the older stuff.

clays283

Martin Sheen really went through it while filming "Apocalypse Now". The beginning, where he broke down and hurt his hand, was in fact real. Martin Sheen revealed that he was "dangerously drunk" as he was drinking all day and the cut on his hand from punching the mirror was real (which he still has a scar from). Director Francis Ford Coppola kind of did him dirty because the director knew Sheen had a drinking problem and basically told Sheen to go with it. Even worse, while filming a jungle scene, he had to be airlifted to a hospital due to suffering a heart attack. Later in life, Sheen had this to say about his brush with death: "When filming finally recommenced, Sheen's perspective on his portrayal of Willard had shifted dramatically. "I realized that I'd gone too far,” he admitted to Yahoo Entertainment. “I had bit off more than I could chew, and I was choking on it. I've often said that if I had known going in that I'd have to endure what I did, I would've passed. But I have no regrets because it forced me to come to grips with parts of myself that I otherwise may never have embraced. I'm grateful to Francis for that." https://www.thethings.com/did-francis-ford-coppola-brainwash-martin-sheen-while-filming-apocalypse-now-heart-attack/

Chaos T

One of the trippiest songs ever written. I don't need other things to get me high when listening to the song. The soundscape is enough. It may have been one of the first mainstream radio songs to sneak in the F bomb.

Chaos T

Named after the book that inspired this film.

Chaos T

Popped on to finish your latest Star Trek reactions but had to drop those plans to watch this masterpiece with Mr. Video.

Chaos T

The Narration from martin sheen through this reminds me of Max Payne lol

SpicyRikers

dmh killah

SpicyRikers

"My only friend, the end!" Listened to this one on a depressed day many times as many people probably have, the doors are good for a bad mood day xD

SpicyRikers

13:00 MAC-V-SOG was super secret stuff. Operating in Cambodia where we weren't supposed to be. Coming back from Iraq was weird, like suddenly out of a pressure cooker. Can't speak for viet nam. People were spitting on them when they came home from a war they didn't want to go to in the first place (drafted).

Greg

Wym first horror ever?

Nathan

The song is The End by The Doors. Long ass song it’s like 15 minutes

Nathan

Mr. Clean is Morpheus and the guy coughing at the beginning who asked him to terminate the Colonial is Han Solo.

Jeffery Bezos

This is a difficult but necessary film.

Susan B

Wow. I had forgotten that Harrison Ford was in this film. In the early scene where the officers are briefing Sheen on his mission, the young officer wearing glasses is Harrison Ford aka Han Solo

Susan B

Dam leo you are firing out the Hot Picks!! Loving it! Ive posted in the Recommendations part of the discord by the way! I recommended a 70s scifi movie called westworld, check it out!!

HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the documentary Hearts of Darkness about the making of this movie. A lot of incredibly hard work, rough filming conditions and genius filmmaking went into this one.
