Screwed indeed. Unless you found the subtitled dvd versions, we had to wait for cartoon network to get a dub version. By then we were near the end of DBZ series. I dont even remember if they had more than 1 season of the original Dragonball series before CrunchyRoll, & Hulu blew up.

There was some test audience and other things but most Americans started watching the show at the same place you did with DragonBall Z. However, growing up in Europe I got to watch the OG DragonBall first, when Goku was still a kid. American audiences got screwed.
