2024-10-01 00:45:39 +0000 UTCThis was actually the sequel to Murder in Mississippi which the way it ended was how this movie opened with the 2 white guys and the black guy being chased down by the local racist law enforcement and clansmen. It was students from a university that were coming to try and make a difference and tried to get rid of segregation but the locals were stirred up by it causing a ruckus which ended with them being killed.. sad story in both films.. indeed hard to watch at times.

Paul Johnson won the hearts of Mississippians at the time with his explanation of the NAACP. This film in 2024 looks crazy and to modern viewers might seem an exaggeration. However, this film is pretty accurate to what Jim Crow was in American history. "Mississippi Burning" is art but also a reminder of a past that wasn't that too long ago within the United States. BTW, this is a Time article from 1963 that mentions Johnson's comment about the NAACP. Reading this article in 2024 is wild. I found it hilarious Mississippi politics was in such a state to where if a politician sided with JFK on some issues, they were viewed as extreme ๐ https://time.com/archive/6829567/mississippi-if-you-try-dont-succeed/

As dubious as the FBI is at times, their track record on the crimes shown in this film is pretty good. The FBI getting involved with every case considered a hate crime is one of the positive things about that agency.

2024-09-29 10:40:59 +0000 UTCI'm very happy Mr. Video reacted to this important film. I saw this film in my youth yet many of the themes and scenes stuck with me decades later. What I always remembered about this film is the barber scene with the mayor listening to a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game. It's hilarious because the St. Louis Cardinals were one of the first teams in the MLB to fully integrate which is a huge reason why they were a dominant team in the 1960's. Many members of the Cardinals from that era of baseball experienced horrible, vile racism. Death threats were common. Rupert picked up on this quickly and throughout the scene it was almost as if he was holding back laughing because of the hypocrisy of racists being fans of a baseball team that had prominent black baseball players changing the face of the game. EDIT: This comedy plays out again around 42:40. Dude is eating his dinner being entertained watching Bob Gibson pitch.

When he first asks about the name of the "Trumpet Pitcher" flowers, there are actual Trumpet Pitcher plants right there, but he picks the white flower instead. When he picks the flowers for Mrs. Pale there are again actual trumpet pitcher plants but he picks the white flowers (Yarrow?). Then they talk about the white flowers as if they are colorful carnivorous pitcher plants, which they obviously aren't. I guess they had everything scripted and set up, but realized giving pitcher plants would be a weird looking romantic gesture.
