– Marcus –
I sat in my apartment, glaring at nothing in particular as Annie curled up next to me on the couch. Her head rested on my shoulder.
It sucked, but I failed…
I couldn’t find a hint of Translucent anywhere. Not a trace. It was like he’d vanished into thin air—which was ironic, considering that was literally his thing, except I knew he was going to turn up dead in the next couple days.
The Boys had somehow joined the Khaos Brigade. I had no idea what they did to pull that off, and it was pissing me off. They were supposed to be a joke, a minor inconvenience, something to keep around for entertainment when I got bored. Now they were a genuine problem, especially if they’d managed to get Katerina Leviathan to play along with them. I still couldn’t wrap my head around how that happened. That frigid bitch hated humans more than anything.
“Is he okay?” Annie’s voice broke through my thoughts.
I followed her gaze to A-Train sprawled out on the wooden floor. “He’ll be fine. The resurrection and transformation worked perfectly,” I told her. Annie nodded and I gave her shoulder a squeeze. “He’s part of my peerage now. He’ll be the fastest knight in the underworld.” I couldn't help but smirk at that thought.
Suddenly, A-Train startled awake. His eyes flew open and he started patting himself down. “I’m alive!?” he blurted out, his voice was a bit shaky.
“Yep. Welcome back to the land of the living, A-Train...” I said sarcastically.
“What!?” He was staring at Annie and me on the couch like we held all the answers—which, to be fair, we did. His brain must’ve been racing at super speed, piecing together the events leading up to this moment. His confusion turned to shock when a pair of Devil wings suddenly popped out of his back. “Ah, shit… I really did die, didn’t I?” He groaned and buried his face in his hands. “I can’t believe I got killed by that librarian-looking bitch.”
That got a laugh out of me. “She did look like an evil librarian, didn't she?” My smile suddenly turned more serious. “So,” I started, leaning forward, “what the fuck happened? Why did you just rush in and get yourself killed like that?” I sat back and crossed my arms as A-Train finally started talking.
“I couldn’t wait,” he said. “I found a note. It said they had Translucent at the docks. What was I supposed to do? Just ignore it?”
“Yes,” I said. “That’s exactly what you were supposed to do. Or, I don’t know, maybe wait for me first? All you sent me was a vague text message…”
A-Train scowled and looked away. “I thought I could handle it. I sped over there, but it was a setup. She got me from behind. I… I drowned. I’m fast, but not fast underwater.”
I leaned forward, staring him down. “You’re supposed to be the fastest man in the world. How the hell did you let yourself get caught off guard like that? You’re an idiot.”
Annie, sitting next to me on the couch, put a hand on my arm. “Marcus, don’t be so hard on him. He wasn’t expecting to get attacked by a supervillain. It’s not like this is something any of us are used to.” She glanced at A-Train. “I barely escaped with my life when that Fallen Angel, Raynare, tried to kill me. It’s not like we’re invincible.”
A-Train shook his head and sighed. “Thanks for sticking up for me, Starlight. But Marcus is right. I was stupid. I get tunnel vision sometimes, and this time it cost me badly. I’ve never… I’ve never actually had to fight for my life before. Running’s all I’ve ever needed.”
I let out a breath and leaned back against the couch. “Well, now you know that running isn’t always going to cut it. Welcome to the real world.”
Annie gave me a pointed look but didn’t say anything. A-Train just nodded, his expression somewhere between frustration and shame. Good. Maybe this would be a wake-up call for him. Life as a Devil came with a lot of perks, but it wasn’t for the weak. Only the strongest got to enjoy those perks.
“Come on, now that you’re awake, there’s a meeting with the rest of the Seven.”
…
The meeting room on the top floor of Vought Tower was uncomfortably tense. Everyone was there except for The Deep and of course Translucent.
Asia stood near A-Train. "I don’t hate you," she said gently. "You’re a Devil now, sure, but that doesn’t change the fact that I still love you like a big brother! I’m just glad you’re alive."
A-Train looked at her, and he scratched the back of his neck. "Thanks. That… means a lot."
I watched them from across the room. For a moment, the tension eased slightly, but Queen Maeve quickly brought it back. "Why was this meeting called? And why is everyone here except for The Deep and Translucent?" she asked, looking around.
"We don’t trust The Deep to keep his mouth shut," I said plainly.
Maeve nodded. "Ok, that’s fair. What about Translucent."
Homelander stepped forward, his eyes briefly softening as he looked at Serafall. She gave him a wink, and he smiled at her before turning back to the rest of us. "Translucent has been captured by our enemies and is probably dead," he said bluntly.
Black Noir straightened in his seat, while Maeve let out a startled laugh… His words not quite sinking in yet. "Wait, what!? We have enemies? Like actual enemies? Since when!?"
Of course, Maeve and Black Noir had been left out of the supernatural loop. That wasn’t going to fly anymore. If The Khaos Brigade had equipped The Boys with supernatural weapons or Sacred Gears, they’d be genuine threats. I couldn’t afford for these two to get ambushed because they didn’t know what was going on…
I let my bat-like wings unfurl behind me. Maeve’s eyes went wide, and even Black Noir’s body language shifted, though he stayed silent as usual.
"The fuck are those wings!?" Maeve blurted out.
"They’re my Devil wings," I said. "I’m a half-Devil. My mother—"
"You can call me Levia-tan!" Serafall interrupted, waving at Maeve with a bright smile.
I rolled my eyes but continued. "My mother, Serafall, is one of the rulers of the Underworld and the Devil race. No, we’re not evil, and no, we don’t take human souls."
"Our race isn’t that complicated. Devils were born from Lucifer and the first human woman, Lilith," Serafall added. "Then some rituals were done to modify our magic and wings, but at the end of the day, we’re basically just mutated Fallen Angels. The noble Devils in the Underworld really hate it when I point that out." She giggled at her own comment.
Maeve rubbed her temples. "Okay, so Homelander is shacking up with a genuine demon queen or something. Honestly, that’s not a surprise…"
I snickered, and even Homelander gave a shrug, not bothering to deny it. Asia walked over to Maeve and hugged her, which seemed to settle her nerves a little.
"We’re not at war with Heaven or something, are we?" Maeve asked. "I’ve never been a real Christian, but that wouldn’t exactly sit right with me."
I shook my head. "No, we’re not at war with Heaven. The Khaos Brigade is the problem. They’re a terrorist organization made up of beings from every race, but ultimately, they’re being led by Rizevim, the original Lucifer’s super-evil son. The guy wants to unleash a massive war and cause destruction everywhere. Basically, he’s an evil dick. His motivations aren’t complicated."
"Some of my agents have been looking into the organization," Serafall said, her tone more serious now. "But they’ve been proving very elusive so far."
Queen Maeve leaned forward, her brows drawn together. "So, what should we be doing then? Translucent wasn’t exactly powerful, but the guy was sneaky and tough. If they got to him, what’s stopping them from getting to me or Black Noir?"
"I agree," Homelander said. He looked over at me with a grin before suddenly letting a pair of bat-like wings burst from his back. I thought I sensed something different about him. Also, he was looking more filled out and a bit younger than I remembered seeing him yesterday.
A-Train’s eyes widened. "Woah! You’re a Devil too, Homelander?" His own wings instinctively popped out of his back next.
Maeve stared at both of them in disbelief. "Wait, you’re both Devils now? What the fuck is going on?"
Homelander nodded, his grin growing wider as he glanced at Serafall. "I’m Serafall’s rook. As a devil, I’m stronger, tougher, and now officially immortal."
"Devils are immortal? Like… you’re never going to age at all?" Maeve asked.
I answered before Homelander could. "No Devil has ever died of old age. We can also make ourselves look as old or young as we want. One of the oldest Devils in existence, Runeas Gremory, looks like a sixteen-year-old girl with massive tits. On the other hand, some noble Devils much younger than her by hundreds of years make themselves look like men in their fifties or sixties because they think it makes them look distinguished or some shit."
Serafall grinned. "It just makes them look like dumb old farts. Being young and beautiful is the best!" She pushed her arms up under her chest. “No one wants to see saggy tits or saggy balls!” Despite being my mom, Serafall could easily pass for my sister. I didn’t have any plans to ever make myself look older than twenty-five, either.
There was a briefcase on the table next to Homelander. He popped it open, revealing a set of chess pieces.
"He already has his own Evil Piece set?" I asked, looking at Serafall in surprise.
She winked at me cheekily. "Nepotism is the best!" It was obvious she’d pulled a lot of strings and broken quite a few rules to get a brand-new Devil his own set of Evil Pieces.
Homelander picked up a Rook piece and held it up. "Black Noir is going to be my Rook."
Black Noir shrugged and nodded. Homelander then turned to Maeve.
She grimaced. "I’m down for the immortality and the ability to fly," Maeve said. "But I’m not going to be your servant or whatever. Not after everything you’ve put me through…"
The room grew tense for a moment, but Homelander just chuckled. "I’m not going to make you join my peerage," he said. "...You’re going to join Marcus’s peerage instead!"
"Huh?" I asked, caught off guard.
Serafall nodded. "Queen Maeve would make a good Rook for you, Marcus!"
I shrugged. I had initially considered her, but didn’t really want to go for it considering she used to have sex with Homelander. Serafall must have told him how male Devil peerages worked when it came to the women in them, so if he was passing Maeve off to me then he was obviously completely over her and probably head over heels for Serafall again.
Nearby, Annie bristled. I could tell she was jealous. She’d told me before that she wasn’t ready to lose her humanity yet, but she spoke up anyway. "I’m not letting Queen Maeve join Marcus’s peerage before I do!"
“Don’t I get a say in this?” Maeve crossed her arms. "I didn’t even agree to give up my humanity yet!"
Homelander’s expression hardened. "Do it, or you’re out of The Seven!"
"Fuck… fine. I’ll do it," Maeve said with a sigh.
I turned to Annie. "Are you sure you want to become a Devil? I thought you wanted to wait?"
The beautiful blonde smiled at me. "I really like you, Marcus. I want to be with you no matter what."
I couldn’t help but smile back. I pulled out a bishop piece, knowing Annie’s abilities as a Supe who preferred firing energy blasts made it a perfect fit for her. I held the piece up to her chest, and it glowed before sinking into her body. Annie was officially a Devil now, and she was mine forever…
Annie suddenly stepped forward and kissed me. It wasn’t a soft, unsure kiss—it was aggressive, catching me completely off guard. My mom, standing off to the side, let out a low whistle, clearly amused by the sudden display of affection. I barely had time to react before I felt Annie’s tongue slip into my mouth. Then, just as quickly as it started, she pulled back, her cheeks turning bright red.
“Sorry,” she said, looking flustered. “I don’t know what came over me.”
“Devils are creatures of desire,” I said. “It’s a bit harder for us to hold back emotions like lust compared to humans.”
“Oh,” she said, her voice small. “So, I guess we’ll probably be having sex a lot more often from now on?” She looked away, blushing even harder.
I reached out and gently tilted her chin so I could meet her eyes. “Is that such a bad thing?”
“No,” she admitted, but then she stepped back, clearly needing some space.
“Okay, my turn. Let’s get this over with,” Maeve said, stepping up to me without hesitation. She looked completely unbothered by everything that had just happened, which honestly wasn’t surprising. Maeve didn’t seem like the type to let anything faze her. Or she was just really good at masking her real emotions. I handed her one of my rook pieces, and she didn’t waste any time. She shoved it into her chest. “Huh,” she said, glancing down at herself. “I expected to feel something. A spark, a jolt, or... I don’t know, something a bit more.”
“The overall change will take a couple of hours, but for the most part, you’re now a Devil,” I said. “Congratulations and welcome to the family,” I added dryly.
Maeve shrugged. “What now?”
Before I could answer, Serafall jumped in. “Now I’ve got a surprise for Marcus and his peerage!” she said, clapping her hands together.
I raised an eyebrow. “What kind of surprise?”
“You’re not living in that crummy apartment anymore!” Serafall announced. “I bought you a big mansion near the ocean! It’s a bit out of the way, so people won’t bother you much, but that shouldn’t matter since you can all fly or teleport now.”
…
“Holy shit, this place is big," A-Train exclaimed, spinning around to take it all in. "How many rooms does it even have?"
"Dozens, probably," I said. The mansion was impressive, sure, but coming from the Underworld, I’d seen and lived in much bigger places most of my life. The Sitri mansion, for example, was practically a mini city with hundreds of staff dedicated to serving a small family of noble Devils. Compared to that, this was almost modest.
"Is that a maid?" Queen Maeve asked, sounding genuinely shocked.
A maid I vaguely recognized from back home was approaching us, her movements precise and elegant. "Hello, Master Marcus. Welcome to your new home in the human world," she said with a slight bow. "I’m Regina, the head maid assigned here, along with a small staff of 20 others."
"Twenty is a small staff?" A-Train blurted out, eyes wide.
"Indeed," Regina replied. Another maid appeared from around the corner and approached A-Train. "This is Stella," Regina said. "She will show you to your new quarters, Mr. A-Train. She will be your personal maid as a respected member of Master Marcus’s peerage."
I watched as A-Train’s face turned bright red. Stella walked up to him with a sway in her hips and linked her arm through his, pressing it against her ample chest. "I’m here to take care of your every desire, Master," she said, her voice practically dripping with seduction. Without waiting for a reply, she began leading him down the hallway to the left.
Something told me we wouldn’t be seeing him until tomorrow.
Regina turned back to the rest of us. "Your rooms are on the right side of the mansion," she said.
"Wait, why are we on the complete other side of the mansion from A-Train?" Maeve asked.
Regina glanced at her curiously. "We thought you’d all want to be near Master Marcus as members of his harem," she said like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"Harem!?" Maeve muttered, her jaw dropping.
Annie’s cheeks turned pink, and Asia began sputtering. "Awawawah? I’m part of Marcus’s harem? But we haven’t even held hands yet!" she exclaimed, her face glowing red.
"Did we get this wrong?" Regina asked, tilting her head.
"Obviously!" Maeve pouted. "The only one shacking up with Marcus is Starlight!"
"Y—yeah," Annie stammered…
Regina bowed slightly. "I apologize, but the rooms have already been organized."
Maeve huffed. "...Fine. Just show us the rest of this mansion. If I’m upending my entire life to live here now, then this place better be pretty freaking awesome!"
Regina nodded. "Of course! Would you like to start with the indoor movie theater or the indoor swimming pool?"
Maeve blinked at her. Clearly not expecting either of those things. "Er… both…?"
"Excellent choice, Mistress Queen Maeve," Regina smiled.
"You can just call me Maggie," Maeve muttered, reaching out to grab Asia’s hand. The poor church girl was still blushing furiously and looked completely zoned out.
Regina gestured for us to follow. "Right this way, then."
We reached the movie theater first, and it was larger than some actual cinemas I’d been to. Rows of plush seats faced a massive screen, and there was even a fully stocked snack bar in the back.
"Wow," Annie said, stepping inside and spinning slowly to take it all in. "This is insane!"
"This will be available for your use at any time," Regina said. "We can also arrange private screenings of any films you’d like."
"Not bad," Maeve admitted. "But let’s see the pool."
Regina led us to the indoor swimming pool next. It was massive. There was even a waterslide at one end and a hot tub at the other. Lounge chairs were arranged around the edges, and a bar stood off to the side. A bartender waved at us as we walked by.
"Okay, this place might actually be worth it," Maeve said while glancing around at everything. "How rich is your family exactly, Marcus?"
I shrugged. "Yes…"
Asia finally snapped out of her daze and started looking around too. "Wow! This is all so amazing! It’s like a dream!"
"Shall we continue the tour…?" Regina asked us. “Next we have the basketball courts and the small horse ranch…”
