My daughter is turning twenty-six this month. As much as it’s been a slow journey watching her grow, in the conventional sense and in terms of her condition, this feels too fast. It’s…natural, every bird leaves the nest as some point or other, so I’ll just work through it as anyone in my position would and savor the new norm. That norm might include more carpenters of course, or perhaps skipping straight to stonemasons might be cheaper.

But as simple as it may be to hire a contractor and fix some dents, Ayyla’s continued growth occasionally reveals a crack in her humble, caring personality. On a day like today where she went for a run and planned on taking a bath before dinner, I caught her as she realized her hips have become far too wide for the tub. She won’t admit it, but I know that in her mind outgrowing things can be both pleasant …or troubling, depending on what it is she loses access to.

My youngest however, lacks some of the worry that her big sister harbors. Ayyla paves the way as she figures out what life is like as a giantess, Daisy coasting along a less bumpy road. I’ve got no concerns that she’s a great kid. She’s kind and sweet, excitable and a hard worker. I suppose I just take Ayyla’s gentleness for granted… Daisy hasn’t lost an ounce of her rambunctious personality for any of the feet she’s gained. Yet as I say this, in the past month I can tell she’s got something on her mind. I think I know what it is.

My daughters are free to open up about their thoughts or feelings any time. I respect that they are young adults now, I do my best to check in on them and be there for them but they must decide what they do or don’t need help with. As for myself, I’ll be taking a look at a second retirement, my role at Rose Quartz having been completed. Vetting a replacement may be the last thing I help them do and I’ve gotten a tip from my own Mother about a potential candidate.

The night comes to an end and I’ve got to hold back a tear. My eldest, twenty-six… my youngest, twenty two. I’m grateful we’ve all stayed so close and that everyone is happy, healthy and surrounded by people who support them. This is a chapter of my life I only could have dreamed would go so well, may the rest also end happily.
