Miura
: In fact, the company (1) that produced the first "Berserk" anime was the same one that made the "Pokémon" anime, which was just beginning at the time. However, the company had to be in charge of both of a bright fantasy like "Pokémon" and something like "Berserk". ^laughs^

At that time, what I thought was that "Pokémon" and "Berserk" had very different conceptions about monsters. In other words, it was about how to interpret the keyword "monster".

Thinking about monsters in a literal manner, I thought treating them as the embodiment of the dark side of humans' mind was the appropriate way to do it. However, "Pokémon" suddenly takes a giant leap from there so that even though they're monsters, they're cute.

A monster was well-characterized as a creature that doesn't actually exist and that is everybody's friend. This was totally different from the conception of "monster" that had existed until then.

In my case, I couldn't make that leap. Or rather, I wasn't interested in it.

How do you design a sense of reality that is unique to another world?

──They say that Mr. Soejima has had difficulty coming up with various fantasy designs for his new work.

Soejima
: For a room where the inhabitants of another world live, what kind of table or accessories should I draw to make it (look) realistic? This kind of thing.

Note 1: Miura is referring to Oriental Light & Magic (OLM). The Pokémon TV series debuted 6 months before the 1997 Berserk adaptation.
