Learning Japanese with Berserk: Maelstrom

In episode 366 of the renewed serialization, Schierke and Farnese witness a tumultuous phenomenon around Griffith while in their astral bodies. Schierke equates it to a maelstrom, meaning a violent whirlpool. In Japanese, the kanji used is 潮流, normally pronounced ちょうりゅう (CHOURYUU). It refers to a tidal current, like at sea.

But in this case, the pronunciation メイルストロム (MEIRUSUTOROMU) is added as furigana to the word. The term comes from Dutch originally, and it does fit the phenomenon around Griffith quite well. It also continues the habit of using water metaphors to talk about the Astral World.
