Why are grapes called Foxy

I got a few posts from the YouTube world, and I love the YouTube world. It lead me down another rabbit hole wondering why the concord grape flavor is called foxy.

I love it when reality goes to the unexpected.

It is because of Foxes. The early explorers who were trappers of furs had their noses closer to the Fox than most, and they realized that these wild local grapes smelled like foxes. Apparently in a Foxes scent glands they excrete Methyl Anthranilate, the grape flavor. So they called the grapes foxy, because they do smell like foxes.

"There was something so familiar, and dare I say it, pleasant about this other smell.  I realized that it was the smell of Concord grapes--above and beyond the normal smell of grapes, Concord grapes have a musky powerful essence that distinguishes them from other grapes."
