Brotherhood of the Ring.

At the end of the nineties, at the turn of the millennium, I worked as a courier at a law firm. I was thin, hungry, walked around a lot, and was not bad at navigating the city. But it was a pretty boring job. And I read a lot of books. In lines, on transportation, and just on the go, walking down the streets to the right address, following the road with my peripheral vision. And then I reread The Lord of the Rings. One day, while walking to another address, I passed a former sports complex, which in those years was becoming a spontaneous book market. And I looked into it. Walking there among the rows of books, then mostly pirated (published illegally), I stumbled upon a tray of comic books. Comics were barely published in Russia at the time. We didn't have a comic book culture, we weren't used to it. It was considered a limited form of literature, at best for children. (Our present-day minister of culture in Russia finds it permissible to use this expression even now, which has caused a lot of noise and discontent among today's youth). Back then, comics were brought in from the West, and resold by hand, not bothering to translate, or to comply with a series of issues. Just different disparate comics, in small booklets, for a little money. - Maybe $12 at the time. And I came across a comic book issue, on a universe I didn't know anything about. And I didn't know a word of English at the time. It was a black and white Warhammer 40000 comic, with a primarch, sisters of battle, some kind of legendary blade, orcs, and chaosites..... That's how I remember it. (The comic, as well as my entire collection, later disappeared, and I don't remember where). But then, impressed by the pictures, I started reading Lord of the Rings, imagining events in the Warhammer 40000 setting. The way I could have imagined it by flipping through the comic book. And now, in passing, I sketched the characters of the Brotherhood of the Ring as I would imagine them now, already being a concept artist.)

Братство кольца.

В конце девяностых, на стыке тысячелетий, работал я курьером в юридической фирме. Я был худой, голодный, много ходил, и не плохо ориентировался в городе. Но работа была довольно таки скучная. И я много читал книг. В очередях, транспорте, и просто на ходу, идя по улицам к нужному адресу, следя за дорогой переферийным зрением. И тогда я перечитывал заного "Властелин колец". Однажды , идя по очередному адресу, я проходил мимо бывшего спортивного комплекса, который в те годы становился стихийным рынком книг. И я заглянул в него. Ходя там среди рядов книг, тогда еще большей частью пиратских (изданных незаконно), я наткнулся на лоток с комиксами. Комиксы в росии тогда почти не издавали. У нас не было культуры комиксов, привычки к ним. Считалось что это ограниченый вид литературы, в лучшем случае для детей. (наш, российский, современный министр культуры, находит позволительным выражаться так и сейчас, что вызвало много шуму, и недовольства среди нынешней молодежи). А тогда комиксы привозили с запада, и перепродавали с рук, не утруждая себя переводом, или соблюдением серии выпусков. Просто разные разрозненные комиксы, маленькими буклетами, за немного денег. - может долларов 12 на тот момент. И мне попался номер комикса, по вселенной, о которой я ни чего не знал. А английский я тогда не знал ни слова. Это был черно белый комикс по Вархаммеру 40000, с примархом, сестрами битвы, каким то легендарным клинком, орками, и хаоситами..... Так я помню. (комикс, как и вся моя коллекция, позднее пропали, и  я не помню куда). Но тогда, под впечатлением от картинок, я стал читать "Властелина колец", представляя события в сеттинге Вархамера 40000. Так , как я его мог представлять, пролистав комикс. И вот теперь, мимоходом, я зарисовал персонажей Братства Кольца, как я бы представлял их сейчас, уже будучи концепт художником =)))
