My Most "Interesting" Interview (BTS 36)
Added 2019-04-06 01:12:10 +0000 UTCSo sometimes my job with the BBC Travel Show gets me in awkward situations. Here's a story you won't see me tell anywhere else about a very difficult situation I went through in the last couple months.

I mean, I didn't say it, you did...
2019-04-18 20:06:37 +0000 UTCThis might be too much but it sounds like the guy was just a dick. If a grown person can't be decent even if they haven't eaten breakfast then they need a reality check. Seems to me his "fame" has gone to his head! Good job for sticking it out, you definitely came out the better person!
2019-04-17 04:57:07 +0000 UTCYeah, man. The main thing I took away from that encounter is that I can only control my actions and words, not someone else's. It helps quite a bit when you realize that when someone behaves that way, it's their issue, not yours. Now that I've learned that, the next step is to try to not be visibly fazed when I still need to get something out of someone like that.

2019-04-13 16:56:46 +0000 UTCSo true Marilyn about it being a character building experience. And the show always must go on!
2019-04-13 16:56:23 +0000 UTCIt's so interesting how some people after having agreed to something just refuse to go through with it, but that's life.
2019-04-13 16:54:11 +0000 UTCHahaha! Headstands will need to be my new ice-breaker!
2019-04-13 16:53:32 +0000 UTCGlad you liked it Angie!

2019-04-06 15:38:41 +0000 UTC🤪it’s getting harder and harder to be first on YouTube
2019-04-06 10:00:31 +0000 UTCThanks for sharing this Mike! I'm gearing up for a couple of short documentary shoots in the latter part of the year and so this was great to hear. So tough to keep your cool when an interviewee is acting up. Glad that you took the positives away though =)
2019-04-06 03:26:09 +0000 UTCCongratulations! 👍😁
2019-04-06 02:42:22 +0000 UTCI find it really interesting to learn about what goes on behind a popular TV program - that's why I love BTS clips. Dealing with difficult people - and in the case of some really famous ones, their ego, is often the most challenging to manage. I understand that part about struggling mentally to strategize and think of ways to get your interviewee to give you answers that you can use for your show while trying to look cool and interested. It sucks when you're in a situation wherein "not getting a job done" is not an option or you're not satisfied with an outcome that is different from what you had in mind originally. But I agree that when you pull through those tough situations and have dealt with difficult people, the experience and learning is invaluable. My takeaway from such experiences - especially the things that are totally beyond my control is that it helps build my character and gives me that mental fortitude to handle similar situations in the future somewhat better. Thanks for sharing Mike! 🐉😊
2019-04-06 02:41:02 +0000 UTCWow, man. Major props to you for pushing through with the interview like the professional you are even though the guy didn't want to be there and was giving you nothing. Your story kind of reminds me of something I haven't thought about in years. I had to interview a school security guard about the new metal detectors for my high school newspaper once. The guy made it clear to me that he didn't want to be interviewed even though my journalism teacher had set up the interview days earlier. I introduced myself and said I was with the school newspaper and asked if I could ask him some questions about the metal detectors. He said "No" and turned away from me. I just froze. I had no idea what to do. I eventually told him it wouldn't take more than five minutes and he just ignored me, so I had to go back to my teacher to tell him I didn't get the interview. Mortifying, man. You handled that situation so much better than I would have! I probably would have frozen again! Not exactly dragon-like behavior. 😂🐉
