A Year of Making Comics - Update #11a

This kind of embarrasses me, but is a part of writing. I posted my MCU comic yesterday, thinking it was fairly clever, but not feeling totally 100% about it. I realized after I'd put it up here, the problem wasn't so much in the concept, but in the execution. I was hemming and hawing in the text, being too wordy and mush-mouthed, and I think worst of all, not using the pictures to say something greater than what the captions were already articulating. So, I rewrote the piece (I also redrew it, because I find a lot of the time, that time spent on the drawing helps me fine-tune the wording). Here it is again (uncolored this time).

If the original version of this elicited a chuckle from you, I'm guessing it won't happen again the second time around, but hopefully you agree this is a stronger cartoon. All the same basic ideas, but I think more put together now.

You guys, I know, will forgive me for the false start. More regrettably is that I did submit the original version of this to The New Yorker Daily Shouts feature yesterday. That particular online publisher has been a weird one for me, I sent them something about five years ago that they immediately accepted and published, but then they started rejecting everything else I proposed, and the last few times around haven't even responded at all. Like a lot of marquee brands, they actually pay worse than other less-highly-regarded outlets, and that's because it's a feather in a cartoonist's cap to have work published there. I still want to get a second thing up on the site. My feeling is that this won't be it. But I feel better about this piece overall now.
