A Year of Making Comics - Update #7

Haha, no, this isn’t a current self-portrait (at least not this week), but it’s the start of a comic I’m hoping to make about reading novels.
Reading is important to me, but I’ve found that like all things that aren’t always easy, it takes some practice and effort to maintain a consistent reading practice (like going to the gym!). I’ve been killing it lately reading novel after novel. I recently discovered Sigrid Nunez with her book, The Friend, which I loved, and then right after that What Are You Going Through which I liked even better. Concise, uncluttered prose, that leaves me feeling full inside. The comic I’ve got in mind is about a bad night in terms of worries, where I had to get out of bed, but sitting up reading Nunez’s novel about a woman dying of cancer, helped me feel weirdly at peace with the world. Connected through art.
We’ll see how it goes…
I started reading Nunez’s first novel, A Feather on the Breath of God, which I am also loving, but had to set aside because I got a hold of an advance review copy of the new biography of Vince McMahon, RINGMASTER, by Abraham Josephine Riesman, and I’m thinking if I can get it read, maybe I can pitch a new review comic to the NYT. I’m not a wrestling person, but I relate to wrestlers in that cartooning is a similar kind of occupation (unsteady, no benefits, no safety net, a lot of doing it for the love, and a lot of getting taken advantage of), I think I should be able to find my angle.

New ‘zines should be arriving sometime today, so will start going into the mail tomorrow! *** edit: I got a note that they won't be arriving today, it's looking more like Thursday :( ***
