Some additional info in regards to the communication problem, do NOT READ if you want ro avoid spoilers from the Novel: It's not as easy for their tribe members to "just do it". Most of the tribe never learned to talk. Her parents learned it because of her. Imagine being 100 years old, never used the muscles needed to talk. How long would it take you now to learn to move your ears with the muscles you never learned to use? I can't even imagine how hard it would be and how long it would takes to learn to use your muscles to talk, learn how to make specific sounds etc.
