As for your question about the bird; it’s the “canary in a coal mine” which was a practice miners would use to detect environmental issues early in order to evacuate before the issue was large enough to affect humans. Louise seeing the bird was ok gave her an extra bit of confidence to take off the suit when trying to further communications.
