Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) FULL WATCH ALONG w/ Coby

Coby had a good enough time with this crazy special haha

Comments

You would have thought by now knowing George Lucas would do anything for a buck he would have long ago had the Holiday Special released on DVD and Bluray. He knows how infamous it is but also collectors and Star Wars fans would gladly put money down for an official physical copy.

Hey Coby, l really like you and Cash’s matching Chewie outfits. The only way to even halfway understand this weird acid trip of a special, is to go down a YouTube rabbit hole of 70s TV variety specials. They are all almost this weird. Almost. This Star Wars special is hands down the worst. But the Paul Lynde Halloween special is a close second. It features Florence Henderson, Kiss, and I’m not kidding the actual wicked witch from The Wizard of Oz. I think they reference it in a scene from That 70s Show.

"Stir, whip, stir, whip, whip, whip, stir, whip, stir, whip, whip, whip, stir, whip, stir, whip, whip, whip, stir!" Not many people new to Star Wars have the courage to even think of watching this, let alone finish it. I loved your reactions and was laughing the whole time! The special has never been released on video, but bootleg videos circulated for years, and the show can be seen all over the internet which included commercials. George Lucas remarked at an Australian convention, "If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every bootlegged copy of that program and smash it." Bea Arthur claimed she only appeared in this special because her younger son was a big fan of A New Hope. Harrison Ford was particularly reluctant to appear in this special, but eventually was convinced. You were right about Mark Hamill. He was recovering from reconstructive surgery after a near fatal car accident. The Life Day song Carrie Fisher sings is based on the theme from A New Hope. Fisher demanded that she be allowed to sing in this special, but didn't like the song.

It is one of the strangest Star Wars things I have ever experienced. I have seen it only a couple of times and I can see where the opinion comes from. Everyone has basic disowned it. I saw an anecdote that Carrie Fisher got an official copy in an exchange with Lucas for doing an audio commentary. She would play this at her house parties when she wanted everyone to leave and it worked. However certain things have be taken for it and made canon, for example Life Day.
