I also do like the approach it seems they're going for .. where the parents don't get easy excuses that justifies everything, but feels like a real situation.
To be fair to Saki's mom, it comes across to me like she thinks she wasn't a fit mother. For whatever reason. Saki would have good reason not to give her a chance, but her heart is big enough. I hope her trust is rewarded. People change.
As far as makoto's mom, yeah wow. It looks like trauma of some kind from her childhood. Not justifiable, but hopefully they can reconcile enough. Parent child relationships aren't always perfect, but sometimes you just have to look past the bad stuff to embrace them anyway. I've been there.

The dad was not staring. They said they arrested someone, and there was a large gap between the window incident and the dad coming home. I also assume it's hard to receive messages when he's on the ocean so much.
