As great as John Woo is he just wasn't the right fit for M:I, like you said he has his own style and this franchise isn't fit for that kind of film making. But then again this was only the second movie, I'm sure they never would have expected this franchise to be 8 movies long and still going to this day so many years later so you can't blame them in 2000 for thinking this movie was going to be a blockbuster. But you are right about MI3, from then on the franchise just gets better and better.
