And before Nagant, it was Gentle. Gentle forced him to view things outside of "good or bad, hero or villain". It's actually a very important arc in the narrative of the series. When he was talking with the vestiges in s6 about saving Shiggy, gentle and la brava were central in his mind. Also, the reason gentle is crazy strong here is because of la brava 's love quirk being supercharged. The time away made their love stronger.
