Added 2023-10-14 19:44:22 +0000 UTCWow... I really wasn't expecting that confrontation to happen so quickly. Genuinely, that speech was like some godamn poetry. Easily the best episode of the series so far.
You know a series is amazingly written when you can clearly tell that the MC is in the wrong, but it makes COMPLETE sense as to why he thinks the way he does. Like Hikigaya is clearly in the wrong about Yui, given her reaction, but I totally understand why he thinks the way he does.
Such a good episode... Like I said during the reaction, I feel like there were things I didn't full comprehend as they were intended to be comprehended, so if there is any details that I was incorrect on, please fill me in! :)
Also I kind of rambled a lot towards the end of this one while I was trying to fully understand everything he had said. So I apologize about that lol

the thing with hikigaya is he is actually right when he posits that yui only started talking to him cause he saved her dog and felt indebted to him, we know the group of friends she has and how her whole dynamic is to always fit in and not push too hard on anything even if she personally disagrees or doesn't like the idea. We only see her do so when yukino push's her to do so and serves as a sort of role model/example of someone she would like to be. So anyone can come to the logical conclusion that if she was still in that mindset and "only" part of the group she has been, she would probably not have interacted with hikigaya much at all without the excuse/debt of him saving her dog. (maybe not ever... or at least as early as she has) The only thing hikigaya is "misunderstanding" is that while someone could have originally done something as a favor out of pity or to be "generically" "kind", that doesn't mean that after spending a considerable amount of time with them it couldn't evolve into something different. You will probably notice this as you watch more but the thing is hikigaya is actually correct "a lot" of the time (i wont say how), not only is his understanding ground in experience (a lot of it) but observation as well. His issue's rise when he can't see past initial interaction's, that things can change with time or that people may not believe what they say they do originally. Don't worry too much about not putting all the pieces together early on as i have seen a lot of people who have watched the entire series still not actually get the characters even by the end of all 3 seasons (usually cause they apply how people interact and view things "NOW" in current year). i enjoy your reactions and how you try and piece things together as they pop up and also will go back to previous scenes yourself if you think you may have missed/misunderstood something, not a lot of reactors take the time to pause and talk about scenes/interactions as they happen... it should honestly be the standard. Keep up the good work

But yeah I agree it is kinda hard to toe the line of what's spoilers and what isn't regarding character development situations

2023-10-14 21:45:54 +0000 UTCThis is why the "filling you in" on what you didn't understand in the future can also feel spoiler-ish in my opinion; depending of what is considered a spoiler to you of course; to me a lot of the fun was trying to get a correct read on the characters and it feels like if others make you realize stuff like the Yui trying to emulate Yukino thing it would make it less fun than if you got to one of those correct or incorrect read on a character by yourself. Though if you prefer to be in the "known" and to not make incorrect reading I also understand it completely.

Oh just another little detail, you missed a special ed this episode where yui sings the ed alone, it has different lyrics and it's quite a bit more melancholic. These happen on occassion when there's huge impactful moments in an episode, so if you're interested in always getting "the full episode experience", it might be interesting looking out for that. It's not all that bad that you missed it, I just know it made me quite emotional the first time I watched the episode and the lyrics are quite good as well, but I don't wanna keep pestering you about always paying attention to OPs, EDs and their lyrics as I seem to have a knack for that haha

I would say you understood all of the end of the episode pretty much correctly, as with most show of this genre you will learn more about them as time goes on and you will probably be like "ah damn that's say he/she said that in the episode X". Great reaction.

But it makes sense why he's built these barriers around himself as to not ever get his hopes up again. Like I said, I understood the situation for the most part, but I definitely did not recognize the part about how he prefers the relationships where they both insult each other because in his mind it means they're acknowledging him as a person. I also definitely didn't notice that Yui has been forcing herself to emulate Yukino's behavior, she's definitely a lot more perceptive than I first gave her credit for. It's very interesting because I agree 100%, before ANY romance can happen he'll need to go through a lot of development. Because his current mindset is completely wrong. It's funny though, because even though I know he's in the wrong, I almost want to sympathize with him because I feel bad for all of the shit he's gone through. Like it makes sense why he's the way he is (which of course doesn't mean it's fine staying that way) and I'm sure we'll get some amazing development as the seasons progress. One of his lines was something along the lines of "just introductions with a girl with make me curious" or something like that. Then it's pretty easy to recognize from there why he states that he "hates" these kinds of girls. Because if he tells himself that, he won't have to get let down again, or grow feelings for someone who doesn't like him back. I also like how when he saw Yui crying, the shocked look on his face immediately told me that he knew he was wrong. But he refused to correct himself, because he can't afford to let those barriers fall down. Sorry I kind of ended up rambling lol, I just have a lot of thoughts on this episode as a whole. If the show continues on like this, expect more of these paragraphs XD

2023-10-14 21:24:27 +0000 UTCHachiman is a very principled character so if there's supposed to be any chance of romance in the future, there's a strong need for a huge change in his character at this point. He is not open to hope or romance or really relationships of any kind, that should have become clear by now. I think the most important part of his monologue is the part where he points out that, if a girl is nice to him, she's nice to everyone. He absolutely hates that, because in that case, why is he even there? It's interesting, because while the insults and remarks being made towards him by a lot of the characters, especially Yukino, are obviously really harsh, he kind of prefers this because at least he's being acknowledged as a person to some degree. There's something he can latch on to there, as opposed to the surface level "niceness" he sees in someone like Yui. (Side note: It is interesting to note that Yui seems to sometimes try to emulate the harshness and insults of Yukino, because even she seems to realise that he is much more open to that sort of dynamic and it therefore seems to be the only way to build an actual relationship with him at present) Also, of course, most of the things Hachiman thinks about and monologues about are principles he's made for himself that are completely removed from reality at times, Yui's reaction made it clear that he was simply wrong about presuming the worst in this case. In the first place, it is technically not the fault of the girl who is being nice to him that he ends up misunderstanding things, being nice to everyone is, after all, still a good thing, I would say. It's just a self-defense mechanism for him to hate those girls because he knows otherwise he will most likely end up having his hopes shattered once more, as his past experiences seem to have proven to him. Might be a lot in there that you would've roughly understood already anyway, just wanted to get my thoughts out :P
