A seasoned diplomat, she served as Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to the United States from 2020 to 2023, becoming the first Taiwanese official to attend a U.S. presidential inauguration since 1979 when she attended Joe Biden’s in 2021.

To defend Taiwan against China in an all out war would suggest we would have to be mindful of China’s allies. With that being said, I firmly believe the war games are being played strategically by the U.S. and the proof is precisely what happened as a result of Operation Midnight Hammer. Reducing capabilities is key, especially if there is anticipation of a bigger war/threat.

Incredible insights as usual but for me, it's also personal and I want to explain why. My father was a diplomat for Taiwan, worked at the U.N. and his last post was the Dir of African Affairs . I lived in S. Africa and Lesotho back in the 80-90. Everything your guests (Erik's) talked about is spot on and 'debt-trap' in Africa and 'land-grab' in S China Sea has been China's strategy for decades. The world knows it but money talks and 1B people is just too irresistible to the Market World, that's why no Western media wanted to mess with a good thing. So thank you Shawn for having the righteousness, and brass balls, to use your platform to shine a bright light on this important issue. ps. for my dad, from beyond, I thank you. 🙏🏼 pps. One of the things I noticed and am most impressed about with Hsiao is: given the KMT's past authoritarian regime, and now they seem to be working against the interests of the Taiwanese people and aligning more with the interests of Beijing - Hsiao did not one time mention the KMT by name as this should be a bipartisan issue to keep Taiwanese people safe and strong as well as being prepared for all contingencies. The Taiwanese people are her main priority - not staying in power, not belittling the opposition party. You can tell she speaks from her heart and truly believes in the ideals of freedom, self determination and democracy. We need more leaders like this.
