CIA Brain Exercise: Caliber Selection Part II
Added 2021-07-12 15:53:47 +0000 UTCHello Tier II and Tier III,
Awesome responses in Part I. It's cool to see the reasoning behind your decisions and I liked what I read in the comments section. Remember, there is no right or wrong answer to these questions.
SCENARIO: Bug out on foot to a rural location.
Here are my choices
22LR or 223/556? 22LR
223/556 or 9mm? 9mm
9mm or 12GA 00 Buck? 9mm
12 GA 00 Buck or 7.62x51/308? 7.62x51/308
22LR or 7.62x51/308? 22LR
If you could only have one, which would you choose? 22LR

Ha I did the same thing… wrote off 22’s because my first one(P22) just jammed too much. Shoot a Ruger Mark 3 now and super reliable.

2023-04-22 16:49:16 +0000 UTCI have my glocks (43 & 17), Roni kit for the 17, & my AR (both pistol & rifle). On the 22 though, I always thought it wasn't a viable caliber for these situations since it doesn't have the same firepower as the ones previously mentioned. I've completely disregarded that caliber and I'm glad you changed my mind. I have a Walther P22 and that thing jams like crazy, leading me to believe even more that it's the caliber that sucks. Maybe it's just the gun. Nevertheless, I'm giving the 22 another try. This time in a rifle.

2022-03-29 18:46:15 +0000 UTCA makeshift slug can be made in a shot shell (by cutting an almost circle in the plastic, leaving maybe a 1/4 or 1/8 inch left). Maybe this isn’t a factor in this case, but I figured it was worth mentioning because not everyone knows that trick. Melting glue or wax & mixing the pellets into it can work too & can be loaded into a magazine (unlike the cut shell). A point is that the pellets don’t hit the primers in front of them...

2021-07-13 22:48:38 +0000 UTCAnother way to use this exercise is to evaluate what each person in your bug out party may choose to bring. You, your wife, and kid may each bring something different based on their skills. That allows each of you to be well rounded but also the group to be better prepared. I know it was not necessarily the point of the exercise but thats no reason not to expand the usefulness of it. Keep up the good work.

2021-07-13 17:34:22 +0000 UTCConditions influence the choices. If steady resupply was around that would influence my decisions.

2021-07-13 11:53:13 +0000 UTCThis all makes sense to me. I'd like to know what your choices would be if you had unlimited ammo at your destination.

2021-07-13 01:29:08 +0000 UTCWell I had the same answers except the last 1 I would have to go 9mm just because I have so many 9mm firearms. But the 22lr is the best Ammo consideration because the weight difference. I did the experiment with my 14 year old and wife. My son said 223 and laughed at me for picking 22lr over the 223.
