Handheld Lights - Pistol Techniques

Hello Tier II and Tier III,

This video is in response to a discussion we had on the last Tier III live. Hopefully this helps answer some of the questions.

First and foremost, weapon mounted lights are where it's at if you have a choice.

Let me know what you think in the comments below.

*You are responsible for every round that leaves your barrel. Safe weapons handling is your responsibility.

Adhere to all firearms safety rules and range commands/protocols at your facility. For more info on safety, see https://www.nrablog.com/articles/2015/7/the-rules-of-nra-gun-safety/

Don't know if anyone has said this yet but, You could also modify the grip so the light itself is pressed in between the ring and middle fingers of both hands and pressed against the frame instead of just the dominant hand. I'm tardy to the party but wanted to share that thought after watching this video.

Awesome video! Do you have any tips for carrying a flashlight while operating a Rifle? I am a police officer in a Texas city. Our pistols have weapon lights, but our rifles do not have lights, and we still use iron sights. So I have been fumbling about coming up with the best way to use my handheld flashlight while operating my rifle. I appreciate any advice you have, Shawn. Thanks for all the great content, and keep up the excellent work!

Good video. My PD has the same policy in regard to gun mounted lights. I have seen a few flashlight carries with the handgun, but had not seen that variation. Thank you. I will be practicing that method.

Eric Denson

Good choice!

Shawn

Weapon mounted lights would be a plus.

Shawn

Did not know that! That is a good data point. What reasoning did they have behind that?

Shawn

Thanks David! Weapon mounted lights are where it's at.

Shawn

I finally broke down and bought a pistol light. I got a Stream Light TLR-1. I use a similar light on my fire helmet.

Hey, at least the NYPD hasn't punished their officers yet by having them carry the POS pistol you use in this video. Seems like something they would use to get rid of birds on the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

It's completely fucked up that the NYPD won't allow their officers to have lights on their pistols. I mean, are they for fucking real? All of America, at least in the non-communist parts, has lights affixed on their firearms, hand guns or long guns. I feel very sorry for any NYPD officer to have to endure the kinds of shit that they have to go through. I admire any officer who, despite all this shit, keeps on going policing this city. Given the fact that neither your city political or actual police leaders have your backs, you guys really must have balls of steel, a characteristic we could definitely use a lot more of in this country everywhere.

Weapon mounted lights are illegal in germany, just the possession of a light, that is designed to be attached to a firearm is a crime here. But some companies have developed practical and simple solutions to enable at least pistol shooters to carry a light simultaneously allowing a good grip on your pistol. I don't know how to post pictures or videos in here, otherwise i could show my solution. Its probably better than the technique shown in the video above...

Hi Shawn. Great video and explanation on why a weapon light is better. This series of videos made me rethink about what I was taught earlier about using hand held lights instead of a weapon light. Back then they recommended the light in the off hand extended. Your explanation of saying that most shots would go lower left into you makes sense. Therefore, the weapon light is the way to go. I just ordered a streamlight TRL7a for my Glock 19 and a holster to accommodate it. Looking forward to training with that. Your videos are extremely helpful. Thank you for all you do.

David Keller

In the queue. Going to do some 2 man training.

Shawn

Hats coming in hot very soon!

Shawn

Hi Shawn, amazing content. Are you planing to make one with some small unit tactics? Would be nice to see a video on 2 to 4 people clearing a room.

D. Arrojo

Good video how about the gear you ran in low profile agency ops. Or what you would use if in that situation now. Also please restock hats we must all have tiny heads, lol.
