Pistol Fundamentals: The Draw

Hello Tier II and Tier III,

This video covers the defensive draw. It is all about getting a consistent, positive, grip every single time. I like to show the positions by the numbers. This takes time to master.

Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below. This video will likely have follow up videos.

I cannot stress this enough for training the draw. BE SAFE. If you are practicing dry, visually and physically make sure you are clear. You do not want to be that guy.

As always, adhere to all firearms safety rules and range commands/protocols at your facility. For more info on safety, see https://www.nrablog.com/articles/2015/7/the-rules-of-nra-gun-safety/

Lots of reps for positive purchase every time after defeating the retention. Consistency will be key.

Shawn

Depends on you setup and which garment. Check out this one from a while back might help for visual. https://www.patreon.com/posts/25-yard-drill-42542310

Shawn

Do you clear your garment with your right or left hand? Assuming a person is right handed?

Josh Gross

I know it's an old vid, but when getting your webbing around the dovetail before drawing, how would you apply this to a holster with a level 3 retention holster? I can't seem to get a full purchase before pulling.

Thanks Jason! Glad it helps. Keep at it. Consistency is key. Same draw every time.

Shawn

I've watched several videos on drawing from the holster and this is the best one for me. I think some forget the bring the gun to center chest and get your grip. Practicing at home I immediately had a better sight picture when extending. Thanks!

Jason Nichols

This vid just saved lives - no one else talks about this online...

Justin

Thank you Andrew! Let me know how it goes.

Shawn

Thanks for this. I've watched several instructional videos on defensive draw, CCW draw, etc. and this is the most simplistic and effective instruction I've seen on the topic. Will be applying this in practice for sure!

Andrew Sienkiewicz

Another great video with awesome instruction. Please keep em coming

Brian Moers

I'll make a video on this!

Shawn

Thanks Standstill! Yeah step 3 getting that grip right will translate to higher accuracy.

Shawn

Thanks Trevor!

Shawn

Can you comment on canted vs straight holsters. I have difficulty establishing a great grip when using canted holster.

Michael Darche

Wow, I’ve been blowing right through step 3 and wondering why I get so much muzzle flip/ grip problems (like losing it) That vid was a solid gold knowledge bomb!!

Baylis

Another great video Shawn. The way you break things down and explain the key points is awesome.
