Mindset: Reading The Room

Hello Patrons,

I hope all of you are safe and in good health.

Had a great live tonight with Tier III lots of great questions and engagement.

Here is a video on Mindset and Situational Awareness, applied to the concept of Reading The Room. This one will probably raise more questions and feel free to leave them in the comments.

Thanks Ryan! More like this in production.

Shawn

Welcome to VE Patreon! I'll think about that for the next one of these. Might help explain it a little more too.

Shawn

Hey Shawn and Vigilance Elite! New subscriber here. On these training/tactics vids it might be helpful for us to see a POV shot . LOL i know, but a Gopro mounted to your head/chest could offer a valuable angle for us couch-turds. Could look goofy, could also be very cool. Thank you for your hard work!

All of these questions are important and should be addressed in pieces. More videos like this in the queue after we finish up the Fundamentals Series. Your way of thinking is in the right place. Real life isn't like paper targets. Stay tuned more videos like this coming.

One thing I would really like to see expanded on this is maybe a video of a two man team or more going through the motions together. Even with a lot of experience I wouldn't necessarily trust myself to always make great decisions on firing. What if I go in expecting bad guys, I see movement, and learn it's just a innocent person running for cover? What if I shoot them, but also what if I don't shoot them but focus too much attention on them and don't see the guy with the gun behind them? What if I don't pay enough attention to them, look for the guy with the gun, and allow them to grab a gun from behind the cover? If I can't trust my own decision making, I'm never going to trust the other guy(s) entering with me. So to me, I would be afraid of moving to that inside corner, because if team guy 2 moves to the stair landing and makes a poor decision, I'm standing directly in his zone of fire. The other part is, slowing it down and moving through it in training is one thing, but in the real world you don't know the room and have to make this up as you go. It would be interesting to see how some SFOs would make decisions sort of real time and then come back through with a debrief of why they made the decisions they made. Sorry for the wordy response, but my next question would be where does the team move next? Clear the floor you're on or follow the targets if one were to pop his head over the upper banister? Thanks, brother! Again, sorry for the novel I wrote you.

Going to do more of these types of videos later this year when the SRS schedule frees me up a bit. 👊🏻

Perhaps we can get into the mindset of picking lines of entry into different spaces. You could demonstrate this solo vs. if you have a partner (or partners) and have pre-designated sectors of fire (respective). If this can be filmed from first person view (as it makes sense) that would be helpful. E.g. first person view, talk us through your approach to the structure and let us know what you are thinking. Now I'm at the door, door swing considerations etc. I would also like to know your mindset entering a space you've never been before in the absence of intel. Thinking... if you can pick good lines, secure points of dominance in an unknown space, it will top-down lesser tasks. I know this could be challenging in regards to filming and spaces, just throwing it out there for consideration. Thank you sir.

Ha! I like your style 👊🏻.

Shawn

Hahaha. Gotta get out of the center of the room. 👊🏻

Shawn

1. Pull up to the cabin. 2. Cautiously open the door. 3. Go back to the truck. 4. Send in the drone to take pics, stream video, whatever you can get it to do. Now that might sound kinda funny. But the time is coming, if it's not already here ... ... and/or ... Use your cell phone camera to peek around corners, or maybe even to peek through windows from the outside.

P.S. Next cabin (a.k.a. first cabin) I build...One window install, two max! 😂

Late to the party. I am new to firearms, definitely new to CQB, but it seems that Shawn has brought us into a kill box… Good luck everyone.

Shawn - just watched the video, which was very informative. If there was a bad guy in the middle of the room and you were solo; would you engage from outside first or enter while clearing at the same time? I know solo clearing is not ideal but sometimes it's necessary. BTW - nice DE .50 cal Those are so fun to shoot and surprisingly accurate as hell.

Michael .
