Cardi B, fat-phobia is unacceptable

be careful the things you turn blind eye to.

Cardi B, fat-phobia is unacceptable

Comments

Even if she has a point, you have to be careful.

Rainy Feathers

and we still cant boycott chick fil a in 2025 ? 🤨

emil

The first sign of pregnancy for me w Cardi was when she wore that plaid skirt. I’m like LAWD she pregnant again congrats we gon get the album but not the tour

E.

That wasn't her first one????

brittany hawkins

Never been big but have been made fun of for being skinny. Not the same thing but I definitely get a type of feeling any time I hear ppl make fat jokes as someone who has experienced self consciousness. Especially when it’s adults it just makes me cringe like wow just so not funny or clever at all

Marie

:/

Jocelyn

Also Kenya I NEED to hear your thoughts on Girls. It's one of my favorite tv shows and there is an endless amount of things to unpack in it. The way in which Lena Dunham got treated by people online was so so bizarre, like people said it wasn't realistic that Patrick Wilson would want to have sex with Hannah......now why is that?

Elijah Ritch

Cardi saying she's not gonna read a book is soooooooo funny to me – and I say that as someone who genuinely likes her. If anyone needs to read a book, it's her.

Elijah Ritch

“ my family makes fun of everything!” says the girl with low self esteem weve seen be dogged out for a decade

Isis Shackelford

Whenever discourse about fatphobia arises people always downplay its effect. Especially so-called educated people who become willfully ignorant about it, they can highlight the -isms except fatphobia

Serena

Cardi saying she's not going to read any books is hilarious on a dark level because like...no one asked for an apology they're asking her to educate herself, and she can't even do that.

Ayanna

Also anyone who doesn't believe discrimination against larger people is a real thing, just watch The Biggest Loser documentary on Netflix and see the cruel, inhumane and dangerous ways the contestants were treated all in the name of losing weight.

Orneno Wright

I don't think there is any tone that Samyra could have used that would have made her message more palatable to Cardi B. Cardi doesn't see her actions as wrong because she truly thinks that fat people should just shut up and take the joke or "put down the Chick fil a" She absolutely stitched Samyra's video so her fans could attack her and validate her disgusting takes. She was already complaining about the fact that she felt she couldn't tell fat jokes anymore during the live, and it's like girl, this is the hill you want to die on instead of making sure you have enough sizes available for the big girls that do support you? Fat phobia is one of the forms of discrimination that people think is okay because they see fatness as a moral failing of individuals. These views absolutely have real life consequences. Southwest just passed a policy that if a passenger can't fit in one seat they have to buy another plane ticket. EVERYONE complains about seating sizes and space on planes. But people won't speak up about this because the general consensus is that fat people shouldn't exist instead of the airlines need to do more to make their planes accommodating for everyone.

Orneno Wright

i agree that cardi b was in the wrong and should have just took her L for being insensitive but i also have an issue with samyra and her supporters. i'm in deep on keeping up w the fat acceptance/body positive community and all of the drama they have (it's more than you would think LMAO) and people were on tik tok comparing her to MALCOLM X and calling her an activist. i feel like the word activist is thrown around so frivolously and i'm sorry but someone who's entire "activism" is just making tik toks is nobody's malcolm X. samyra herself is also known for bullying smaller creators who call out ANY criticisms about her and sending all of her supporters to attack them, so i think it's really interesting that she was so upset about cardi b doing the same thing to her. obviously it's on a bigger scale and it's wrong REGARDLESS but imo you kinda reap what you sow. fatphobia and the way it ties into race is something we should discuss but turning it into a pissing contest on both sides about who can be more insufferable is not the way to go about it 😭

jewel

Idk if you saw, but she did go on a social media hiatus 😬 Also Cardi said that she’s no longer doing lives because of this, which is crazy

NJK_Jinkies

Would love a video review of Tina’s book (and your braces!)

BA

although i also love Karen & am also happy that she’s being released, but after getting a 3rd or 4th DUI, community service is just not going to cut it idk

Kenya Moore

Also, had an ex who worked at a juvenile facility. Most of the young men in there were murderers and very unapologetic about that. So no I don’t think there necessarily needs a cap on time you can receive either just because you’re young. Most of them arent going to change.

Jade White

Gonna have to strongly disagree with your viewpoint on Karen going to jail. After 4 DUIs she absolutely deserved to serve time behind bars. She could have killed someone and she didn’t care! Personally I think she should stay a little longer.

Jade White

I'd love an episode of your thoughts on hbo girls since you're currently rewatching and how it holds up today (I've been watching for the first time this past year and it's been a really interesting experience, it feels like a time capsule almost)

Ray

Even the court case, the viral clips are the “security heavy” and “she’s big” moments After losing 20kg, yeah it’s a lot nicer being smaller - bc people treat you nicer

Vanessa Carlos

I will say as someone who has always been fat and grew up in the early 2000s (im 28 now), the modern sociocultural concept specifically of women’s fatness has been more realistic and understanding of weight as a complex and multifaceted issue. However, i have noticed a DISTINCT increase in fatphobia with the rise of ozempic and glp-1s as i think most people have swung back to believing “there’s no excuse to be fat” as its “easier than ever to lose weight”. For example, my lash tech felt comfortable enough to say i “should really get on ozempic” bc i’d “feel and look better”. I’ve known her for years and know this came from a very genuine place, but when i tell people about instances like that the reaction used to be shock, now i find its more “well would you be interested?”. I say that to say fatphobia has definitely risen and we’ve regressed a lot, not surprising in the larger social context of a return to conservativism and white supremacy overall 💀

taylor

I literally comments the same thing like why is making fun of ppl in your family so mean and normalised...

Bekah

But the context doesn't negate the affects it will have it's the fact she could have made a joke about the 3xl being sold out without actually being fatphobic cause could have been like "my 3xl are my only real fans every else gotta clock in" maybe cause im different but even if i didnt mean to offend and someone told i was being i would apologise it doesnt hurt you to just apologise 🤷🏾‍♀️

Bekah

It's extremely mean. To be a celebrity and stitch a random person so your stans can go ham on them... life is already hard enough, i can't imagine how lonely is it (well i can as a dark skin woman) trying to explain the phenomena of fatphobia, something she experiences everyday, only for no one to understand her and on top of that have a celebrity tell her to "take a joke". UGH boils my blood

Alexandria U

The comment about if you in my family youd be crying... Why do we not see that as an issue?!... Like my Nan will make a light hearted comment/joke about my weight and i had to call her out immediately and THANKFULLY my mum backed me up like regardless what the intention was the effect doesnt cancel it out

Bekah

I agree, I hate condescension, (especially in grad school, it's so rampant.) It's like whoever is doing the correcting has found their chance to humble someone instead of explaining why the ignorant comment is wrong in a genuine way.

Alexandria U

I do feel like making fun of people and bullying your own is very common in certain cultures. So it's normalized but still wrong. That's all I gotta say about this topic - let me look at the rest

germaninatlanta

this return to early 2000s style of fatphobia is so jarring cause why am i getting spam emails and texts about weight loss injections from the goddamn urgent care!!!! leave me tf alone 😒!!!

a.sierra

“When they see I got a big ass in public” 😭🤭 and she does y’all. It’s something cooking back there

Abisola

cardi shows that she needs to get offline cause it always something

Krystal Latte

Samyra do be passive aggressive at times cause that do be helping getting views and attention to the problems she addressing that fat people go through

Krystal Latte

To be fair, Cardi’s own plus sized fans were making the joke online before she even said anything. That’s where it even came from in the first place. And it was actually in response to Barbz trying to make fun of them because the 3x sold out. Yes fatphobia is a real issue, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes it really isn’t that deep depending on the context of the situation. And I’m saying this as someone who grew up overweight and has my own self image issues. Everything isn’t this massively offensive issue, and different people will have different opinions 🤷‍♀️ Also I feel like there should be levels to jail/consequences depending on the severity of the crime. People who got caught with weed should not be with serial killers, lol. But at the same time, you can’t commit crimes and then complain about going to jail when the conditions are incredibly well known

NJK_Jinkies

I think her tone was a bit irritating because it has that "monique-ess" ness to it. The "i'm your auntie/grandma and let me sit you down for a good country talking to" vibe is kinda off putting when you consider: 1) Cardi is prob around her age 2) Cardi is not "black" like that 3) Cardi is from the bronx/nyc 4) Cardi of all people is not gonna take a lecture like that online At least to me, that's why i thought the delivery was a bit jarring. The message I def agree with though

Davonte

Yeah, I had a feeling that she was “joking” but knew she was about get dragged (and deservedly so). I have to check my own biases in thinking some things don’t have to that deep bc everything is THAT deep at the end otd. This also shows why you can’t like these celebs too much bc wdym fatphobia is lower on your list of importance?? The fact so many (Black and brown) women/people get BBLs, tummy tucked, and mommy makeovers is to run from the association of “letting yourself go” by gaining weight. You don’t want to be fat bc you know how shitty people are treated and the access/privilege you lose if you’re undesirable. And for the issues she says she cares more about, we’re usually seen as more threatening when you’re bigger, and it correlates to why we’re seen as constantly being needed to be put down/tamed/conquered/imprisoned/killed like… conversations I get tired of having with people that don’t want to hear it 🫩🫩

Shotta Khannn

Is it weird that Samyra’s tone didn’t bother me that much? Lol I only saw a few videos but she seemed kind of calm. I think that kick of what is deemed passive aggressive is just that she was irritated. Or recommending books in general makes her feel a little mean (some people see that as thinking you’re smarter than them). I’m not sure how else she could’ve sounded without full out fawning or being meek. The “I didn’t think I would have to tell you…” is a bit irritating but I don’t think I would’ve got as visceral as Cardi lol.

Chantiel McKeiver

I’m a larger girl and I genuinely believe I have no life to live until I start losing weight. I feel that I have no right to travel, take up space in public transport, and go to Beyoncé concerts because of my body. Every time I walk into a room I’m cognisant of who I’m repulsing with my existence. Whenever I’m out with family or we’re having reunions I feel this deep sense of failing them and bringing them shame because I am a fat person that people will be disgusted by and automatically write off. I gave up on wanting to be a lawyer because I know lawyers need to network and how can I network when I’m large? It’s a whole different type of living here for me lol and you’re right about antennas and how the casual fat phobia is so central to how these perceptions of mine were made

Danielle A

lovee the earrings!

Trinity Miller

1 You look stunning Kenya! 🤩 2 Lol agree about the tone being too passive agressive 😂. Cardi stitching the tiktok was INSANE like I just know that person is being relentlessly harassed so badly because of that.

Mai

if they took her license I don't think she didn't need to go to jail. but they won't so I don't feel much for her, especially since this is her 4th.

Dairus Wilson

Kenya have you seen the KATSEYE Gap commercial?

Idle

oooh im early! im going to miss augmas sooo much you keep me going with this videos
