Your not woke friend on Saturday afternoon | Vlogmas Day 14

like please dont confuse me for #blacklove crusader i just think some of yall strange

Comments

That I can agree on. I would be all for traditional diamonds if it weren't so dirty. The fact that people of the land can't benefit from their own resources cause of racism and greed just aches my spirits.

B.Darling

as an African, mined diamonds are killing children across the continent, they are literally blood diamonds. It is not an industry to support at all.

Dolly

I am a Nigerian woman who also agrees with this take, mined diamonds are a cancer to our continent

Dolly

I had the money for a mined diamond, but got a lab because it's preferred to me, it's still a very secure stone (unlike some of the softer stones, unfortunately) and it's hard to find my shape with other stones lmao. Also colored stones are a no from me on rings 😭 and I want an engagement ring 😂 but on actual 'dupes' i agree im just gonna save or not buy it lmao

shandog

ALSO, mined diamonds are only popular because of an Ad a long long time ago! Jewelery propaganda lol

shandog

Yes to this! Lab and mined diamonds have documentation when you buy them and lab (idk about mined? Probably) have a # etched inside the diamond. That's the only way to tell, paperwork or a jewler with the microscope tool. Lab diamonds are real diamonds and i never understood the resale thing bc who plans on reselling their engagement ring 😭😂 (in the context of engagement rings, not talking about other jewelry lol).

shandog

I love old navy active wear and this one brand on Amazon i can't remember lmao. I only buy lulu from their site where people returned stuff that didn't fit and stuff like that for discount! Otherwise.....nah 😂😂

shandog

Still love you Kenya! But you’re very wrong on the labdiamonds one and it’s giving not researched… at all!

Shiloh Goveia

As a Congolese woman, I have to strongly disagree with you on lab diamonds, mined diamonds have caused and continue to chaos wars, mass murders, mass assaults of our women, children and men, please stop buying them. I know y’all don’t care about the rest of the world, but we do deserve to live peaceful happy lives as well, to you is money, to us is our lives and deaths.

Shiloh Goveia

You say it’s morally corrupt to do faux designer but lab diamonds are not real 😭😭 you want kids mining them huh?

Alex

im sorry but i have to disagree with you about lab grown diamonds. while i can respect your opinion on dupes its not applicable to diamonds. people aren’t encouraging moving to lab grown diamonds because of price but ethics. why would we continue to choose something that has slavery enmeshed with its processing when we could just use something that doesn’t?

Isis Shackelford

I never regret my kenya membership. While I find myself regretting others 😪

Oniondip

Do love that this is truly unpopular though haha

Stephanie

I understand the comparison from someone who may not understand the process of how a diamond in the earth is formed. I do want to point out that it is absolutely a real diamond that is being made in the lab. Maybe imperfect natural diamonds will become popular as lab diamonds are pure and genuinely perfect.

Stephanie

I said the same thing. I died. 😂😂

Bria Hall

❤️❤️❤️

Tired Sahelian

I want to tattoo your comment to my skull because why is this me too?!!!? 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 I’ve never dated, but a lot of my crushes on guys in high school were on white and black people. I grew up in a suburban area (mainly white) so I didn’t start getting crushes on black guys until college. I’m also a firm believer in black women going where they are loved 🥰 we spend so much time trying to “fix” broken men that we lose sight of ourselves. I don’t think twice about black men and their interracial relationships. As long as they’re happy!

Dani

No problem! I can also get wordy so I feel you lmao. 😂 Plus you brought up great points! I feel the same way. There's been talks about how we've kinda lost the plot on personal style. Speaking for myself, I've had to make that discernment on taste not only for sustainability and financial reasons (which are hella important to me too), but also just for plain old self discovery and confidence. Fashion is such a creative outlet, and I really want to keep it that way, luxury or not. Thank you for your thoughts on this as well! There are definitely layers to this, and you expanding on it was a great read. 😊

Lilac S.

Just proposed to my non-black partner with a lab diamond ring this year. Love you Kenya but we might be fighting.

jaleel

Thank you for taking the time to read and respond to my comment! I can be a bit long-winded, can't I? 😅 Congratulations on your big girl purchase! It's so exciting to treat yourself! I completely agree with you. It’s wild how some so-called “luxury” items come out of the same factories as knockoffs! 😂 People are beginning to appreciate timeless designs and craftsmanship instead of just brand names. With many consumers becoming more conscious about their spending and sustainability, I wonder if we’ll see a movement toward valuing quality over quantity. Additionally, the impact of social media cannot be understated. The pressure to flaunt high-end items can sometimes overshadow the quality of what we’re buying. It’s almost ironic that as we gain more access to information about where and how products are made, we still see a lot of brand loyalty based on image alone. It seems we need to redefine what luxury means to us personally, rather than letting it be dictated by trends or influencer endorsements. That’s why I’ve decided to focus on my own tastes instead of being gaslighted into thinking some unattractive luxury items are the best, lol. No shade to those who like them, but I’m so glad I’m no longer convincing myself that the popular Van Cleef bracelets are all that >__<. The quality is undeniable, but them things are so ugly to me! Thanks again for the chat—it's always refreshing to exchange ideas on this topic!

Tired Sahelian

like the white people already give us enough shit (but they LOVE a Taco Tuesday) but our own people got an attitude… oh okay!

diego

lol love you but I’m a dupe girly if I can get a similar experience without paying as much im doing it. Like I refuse to buy lululemon me and my old navy active wear against the world forever 🤣 oh and my tarnished jewelry but that’s something I might start splurging on

Kayvonne Ferguson

“My blackness doesn’t negate anybody else’s blackness”

Lavender1495

These takes are HOT 🔥🔥🔥

Lavender1495

This was all soooo well stated. 👏🏽 Some brands are incredible and I be itching to grab one of their pieces (I recently made a big girl purchase myself as a Christmas present), but some are just meh to me, so I get why some people don't care to pay for it tbh. At that point though, I'd rather someone just say they like the design but don't care for the price instead of denying they want to fit in only to do just that. Where this gets interesting though is that there's also the material that comes into question. Cause on some real ish, recently even high fashion houses have been slipping on their QUALITY lately, so it's not even like buying luxury means you're inherently getting something better. Maybe in past years yes, but as of now...not so much. I see some brands price tagging $3000 poly blends you can get for $20 at your local outlet mall and I be like...yeah nah. But they know they can scam that way because they have a "name." It's not all of them, but it's definitely happening.

Lilac S.

I felt so vindicated about the lab diamonds cause i used to think the same, however I learned that LDs are made by just supre pressuring coal to a diamond in a lab. So rather than the time it takes the ground to turn coal to diamonds, it cuts the time it takes cause that same environment is simulated in lab to get the diamonds (this is how my brain saved the info). After I learned this, I changed my mind a bit. I will say, i also learned that the amount of carbon and energy it takes to simulate the diamond making process is also really negative on the planet. If I'm wrong, then ignore me and I still like the real deal.

B.Darling

Idkkkk Kenya, you might want to look more into what lab diamonds actually are. 😬 They're not equivalent to rhinestones, cubic zirconia, or gold plated/sheet metal jewelry at all, so I don't think the knock-off rhetoric applies here. I get having hot takes (we all have em) buuuut...that one gave non researched a liiiiiittle bit.

Lilac S.

as some one who is also mex American, agreed. We are our biggest haters. I live in a border town, so we're always going through customs. I HATE getting a mex am patrol bc they are worse than the white ones!!!

Abbie Nuñez

i'm not a gem person, so i'm sure that when real diamonds are mined and used for jewelry they are cataloged in some fashion that you know it was mined, so sure it might have more resell value but i don't think lab diamonds flooding the market makes mined diamonds more valuable inherently. while i do think there can be a conversation about divesting from something's i don't know how that's gonna play when it comes to gemstones... a thing that has had significance in human cultures for as long as people have been adorning their bodies

Montgomery Price

hating lab diamonds is wild. at least in the context of knockoffs or dupes

Montgomery Price

please me quitting pandora and you start talking about lab grown diamonds

kristhekit

Lab diamonds aren’t fake Kenya 😭

Heidi Diaz

i think these are your hottest takes. like you’ve always alluded or mentioned some of these opinions but like…this is true unpopular territory no shade to previous videos. the baby gloves (??) are OFF and i love it!!!

We see each other on that interracial point I fear. A lot of these people dabble in anti black rhetoric and they don’t even realize sometimes.

Gabriella

I just want to say that this patreon subscription was the best decision I made 2 years ago. Vlogmas and Augmas are so good and feel like an advent calendar. I love listening to Kenya rant as I get ready to start my day. Thanks for the consistency Kenya 😌😌

Kiona Harrison

This entire video featured top tier commentary. Probably my favourite vlogmas upload so far.

carly gill

absolutely seated

Mai

Exactly this!

I'm a silver girly so I pretend I'm not in the corruption conversation but I very much am. Silver was and is blood soaked so it gives me pause when browsing. I'd really like some bullion bars (coins too maybe?), I'd buy silver even if it was worthless💘💝

Rainy Feathers

I acc have a plethora of thoughts about the knockoff convo because I feel like I keep changing my mind, but this is where I’m at today: The world of luxury fashion is kind of weird when you think about it. High end items have this undeniable appeal—they make us feel creative, stylish (and a little important). But then there’s the whole knockoff thing. We bash luxury brands for being exclusive and overpriced, yet we want them anyway, even if it’s through a $20 imitation. It’s funny. Like, what are we really after here? The craftsmanship? The vibe? Or just the way these things make us feel? And let’s be real: luxury brands drop some serious heat lol. They’ve got the means, the teams, and the creative power to set trends and push boundaries. That’s part of why their stuff is so tempting. But that same creativity is locked behind a giant paywall, which is why knockoffs exist. And maybe knockoffs aren’t as bad as they seem. For a lot of people, they’re not about faking status, they’re just a way to tap into fashion without bankrupting yourself. It’s a workaround, sure, but it also feels like a quiet rebellion. Why play into exclusivity when you can look just as good for less? Now, lab-grown diamonds, those are really shaking things up. While knockoffs are what they are, those are real! They’re chemically and visually identical to mined ones, but they’re grown in a lab, so they’re free from the environmental damage and exploitation that comes with mining. And honestly, wanting a big, sparkling diamond doesn’t have to be about status. For so long, big diamonds have been tied to wealth and exclusivity, something only for the rich. But lab diamonds change that. They make it possible to have a beautiful gem without the price tag or the guilt. I think that works towards shifting what diamonds symbolize. Instead of being markers of wealth, they become markers of love, celebration, and individuality. That’s a pretty big win! But here’s where things get tricky. Knockoffs and lab diamonds may not really challenge capitalism or the luxury industry. They still feed the allure of luxury brands, and lab diamonds just uphold the “diamond myth". However, completely divesting from capitalism isn’t realistic for most people imo. I’d argue it’s kind of a privilege. Not everyone can afford to reject the system by only shopping from sustainable brands or rejecting consumer culture altogether. Most people are just trying to do what makes sense for their values, their budget, and/or their lives. That’s where knockoffs and lab diamonds come in. They don’t dismantle capitalism, but they offer ways to engage with it differently. Knockoffs make fashion more accessible, letting people express themselves without needing to play into exclusivity, or at least, not as much. Lab diamonds reimagine the meaning behind a diamond, keeping the beauty and sentiment while stripping away the harm. They’re not perfect, but they’re practical. Small steps like these don’t have to be revolutionary to matter. At the end of the day, it’s not about whether these choices completely reshape the system. I’d say it’s about finding ways to enjoy the things we love without compromising who we are or what we believe in. And maybe that’s the best we can do right now—take what works, leave the rest, and make the system work for us in whatever small ways we can. Capitalism is a huge machine, and I think the road to change will be long and rough. Sustainable small steps are a good way to start! Idk, still flushing my thoughts out. I guess I’m working through with my cognitive dissonance because I still participate in luxury and mined diamonds/gold culture lol! When you can afford those things, it's easy to just capitulate.

Tired Sahelian

Just like with saquan Barkley everybody was up in atlas about his partner being white lol I’m sorry but nothing about that man says he with a black woman 😂😂but even then like WHO CARES

Auriona

some of the value assigned to blood diamonds comes from ppl suggesting they are more “real” than lab grown diamonds when they are exactly the same material

zipporah

these are all very reasonable opinions btw

aiyonna

Yeah, definitely I got her point - I was just curious about what she personally liked because she was saying those things in the context of other people’s politics. I assumed she’d like a gold wedding band because she likes Cartier jewellery!

Danielle A

I get your question...but also i think that's her point. Diamonds, gold and luxury minerals are only valuable bc we say so. There is no inherent value or function in having a wedding band. A couple could be married, sign the marriage certificate and still be good. If everyone did that, then diamonds would lose value.

J

And Beyoncé makes her way into this video too I love HAHAHA

Danielle A

What wedding band would you like? Gold?

Danielle A

This. I don't even think diamonds are that pretty. I asked my husband to get me an ethically sourced diamond or my birthstone. Thankfully he got my birthstone(alexandrite). I plan to continue to get other gems or just gold when we get updated rings.

And then repeated herself like-

Abisola

As a black girl who grew up on the West Coast, particularly in California , black boys were not checking for us unless u were mixed, white , or latina. ( Making this clear it certain parts of California though , not all). But it was rough going to school and seeing the boys that looked like u not want anything to do with u 🤷🏽‍♀️ . Hell. In a lot of these “suburban” or mixed areas, no matter the state , so many men of color were always chasing after white women. My Indian girlfriends for example also struggled with this. Them boys ain’t want nothing to do with them which is laughable because Indian women are some of the most beautiful women walking on this planet. The white supremacy runs deep smh. So growing up all my crushes or boys who had crushes on me were white and latino but MAINLY latino. It wasn’t until i moved and was exposed to to the black mecca that is atlanta, after high school graduation that i garnered more attention from men that looked like me , and therefore dated primarily black men in atlanta (with the exception of one south asian, and one white man) I’m a firm believer in black women going where they are loved in this world. U deserve to he loved out loud and proudly, but whoever it is u see fit to do that. actually i love to see black women in interracial relationships but i don’t feel that way about black men and I side eye them. (Yes im a hypocrite, i aint shit, and its not woke saturday sooo 🤷🏽‍♀️ 🤭 i think black women invest far too much in black men and get little to nothing in return over half the time) that being said , as someone that has a had a diverse catalogue in my dating history, men are pieces of shit no matter what color they are . White , middle eastern, asian , and Latino men treat their women like garbage just as much. This idea that white/non black men men will be the savior for black girls is extremely cringe worthy. I hate to see the way divestors that promote that shit. Im ashamed to admit i fell into the divestor community during the pandemic , but luckily, i was freed from the shackles of that post pandemic. As for black men that purposely avoid dating black women, all i can so is pray for them . Hell, i actually dont care enough to waste a prayer on them lmao. I just dont give a fuck, but do feel sorry for them . I’m back in California now because I’m just not a southern girl at heart and missed the coast 🌊 :/ although I did enjoy my time out there and may consider going back later on in life , and my dating life is dead considering i have pretty much blocked men out of my life for the time being lol. but im curious what it will be like again navigating the dating scene back in California as an adult when im ready to put myself out there again .

T_Maureen_I

I want to download this video into my brain 😌 definitely will take a look at a little devil in America

Alexandria U

On the topic of ir relationship, divestors confuse me. Many want white men but look down on mixed women. Does not make sense. Also, they use intraracial violence as the reason but go up for white men. White men also treat white women like shit. I feel like the goal is to not center men in general.

Serena

I need black women to stop investing in black men that don’t gaf about us, better yet, divest from men in general, Ik this isn’t solely a black women thing, but black women especially need to stop centering their entire existence and personalities around men, especially black men, and seeking their approval, I’ve fully excepted the fact that 2024 black men are just in the gutter and they show they gutter every damn day, so the fact black women still have such unwavering loyalty to these niggas makes me ITCH, like PLEASE hang it up, absolutely none of them are worth shit, and then the black men that don’t date black women are so fucking weird, they make their entire personality about the race of the women they dating not being black, that and then in the same breathe be like “black queens ✊🏾” like stop it, it just sound sounds like overcompensation so you don’t get lashings for not liking women of your own race or only messing with the racially ambiguous girlies, just say you don’t like black women and move you bozo

ceeitrus

The ppl posturing as anti luxury but then proceeding to buy knock offs of said luxury gives very your not anti capitalist your just broke teas 😭

ceeitrus

when the zack fox thing happened I was so confused about the discourse. I thought damn has his last three partners all been Asian or sum? ...No? He's been with this one woman for damn near 10 years? Oh... okay jdsjdjdj liiiike what the hell we talking about?? We doing think pieces over zack fox??

Diana

Sorry, the logic not making sense on the diamonds. People like diamonds! People aren’t going ‘diamonds are stupid’. The conversation is the fact that they are not ethically sourced. So people made lab diamonds to be like you can still have your diamonds without the guilt with it. If the complaints were about the way they are sourced and the found a way to circumvent that, why is that a problem? It’s like vegan dupes. People still like the things they are giving up. So they try to recreate foods without the baggage. Now lab grown diamonds do not really solve ethical problems with diamonds, but they don’t have a a movie starring Leo and Djimon so nobody really cares. Also diamonds have more durability than a rhinestones. If you want a forever ring, you have to pick durable materials.

Birdie Wolf

Lmaoooo

India Barrow

The “different fonts “ killed me cause I’ve had interest in every race men and woman and they all have their issues child 🤣

Sarah Uwagbai

Diamonds are just solid carbon that is formed under extreme pressure and high temperatures. It takes a billion years for them to form naturally , but human ingenuity said we can do it in 10 minutes. It’s not fake. Like cubic zirconia is a diamond dupe. But lab grown diamonds are legit. Now are lab diamonds as cool? No. A real diamond is a billion years old. The lab diamond was made last week.

Birdie Wolf

I’m actually glad you called this out Kenya , I take accountability for sometimes still having that unconscious bias about hood black culture but for the most part I’m coming to my senses. This is from someone who grew up nigerian , nerdy , painter and was bullied by more black woman than men. Now I try to seek out to have black woman friends / romantic relationships with them . We all need healing and it starts from accountability. Also white people always come to me but I don’t really like it…

Sarah Uwagbai

“Some of you need to be slaves again” ?!?!?! WHAT

Abisola

I’ve dated almost every race at this point and having a preference for someone NOT apart of your race is definitely weird. I think it has a lot to do with the media and how (specifically white people) are portrayed compared to people’s immediate experiences in their own communities. As if white men/women aren’t also capable of being bullies, misogynists, discriminatory , abusive and just plain nasty people like everybody else. I’ve learned that everybody can be trifling just in different fonts lol. And there’s beautiful people everywhere. It makes more sense to me to have a preference for people within your community because there’s an ease of relatability. But the opposite definitely gives trauma. People gone be with who they wanna be with and assumptions will be made regardless

India Barrow

One of the saddest truths a lot of us find out is that the most anti-Black person we know is Black🤦🏾‍♀️

Diandra Says

Hm idk. I believe that it’s ok for black women especially to date outside their race. The femicide rate is high amongst black men and women relationships. Buttt on the other hand, I’m gay as hell, so I say stay away from men completely lmao.

Tiara

Spit my champagne out fooling with Kenya😭

Diandra Says

This was a really good video, Kenya

M.O.

Nah you’re spitting on the interracial thing. I struggled with self-hatred and internalized antiblackness growing up, so my attraction gravitated toward white men, and I deluded myself into thinking that it was just my preference. Idk when the hell I woke up (maybe it was the therapy, maybe it’s the SSRIs) but one day Chris Evans just wasn’t doing it for me anymore 😭 And neither was the rest of the white men I used to be attracted to. Now my attraction gears mainly toward Black men and other men of color. All this to say, you’re right that dating is political.

Imani Branch

Lab diamonds aren’t ’fake’ diamonds therefore they aren’t dupes.. they are the same material just made by different methods. I see the divesting pov though. moissanite is also cool

Jadyn Parker

Also you saying ‘some of you need to be slaves again’ GIRL 😭😭😭 (I agree.)

Imani Branch

“knockoff Chanel off Canal Street” 😭 but yes, to divesting from nonsense.

Shaquan Harris

ok this video awoke something in me. i am mexican and used to work at arby’s (for like 5 years) and we were locally owned but after a few years the owner sold it to a franchise. the franchise owners were Mexican but also had some white people they did business with. and for whatever reason these mexican owners did not like me. i’m very introverted and the old owner knew that but he never gave me any shit and promoted me 2 times while i was there. these new owners, our first meeting i was just like “Hi” and i wasn’t like “Oh Good Morning My Good Sir! Good to meet you!” blah blah blah. so i think that first interaction put me on their shit list or whatever. for the 1 1/2 years i was there while they were owners they never gave me any promotions or raises NOTHING. even though i literally busted my ass everyday for them. it still annoys me to this day because i think i was making probably $13 an hour for doing essentially assistant manager level shit. like I THOUGHT WERE WERE FAMILY HERE

diego

Girl I completely am with you on lab grown diamonds they are also not as environmentally friendly as advertised. Tbh you can get another stone other than a diamond that is ethically sourced or repurpose a family heirloom diamond or buy a used diamond or repurpose an already made engagement ring and make it work for you. Or like you said go non traditional opt out of getting an engagement ring altogether & have that man buy you something else. There are other options other than unethically sourced blood diamonds that are not fake lab grown diamonds that are worthless. If you are going into the institution of marriage especially with a man under the system of patriarchy at least get something of actual value from him that is worth something.

DWG

Kenya would look so cute with short braids! Like a shoulder length medium braid bob :)

You need to make this a seasonal thing
