so… idk if me being 19 years old, might help with the not being in your season, you have been going on. in 2022 from like the end of 2023ish. it WASNT my season. like… when i tell you from the beginning of 2022 to the end of 2022, i felt like i was being tested or like everything was falling apart. and then beginning of 2023 literally STARTED WITH A BANG, because my house got shot up again. and then we had to move and just a whole bunch of shit. and towards the end of 2023, it felt okay, but it ended in a sad way. and now, it feels fine. like 2024 started not bad. sooooo, in my opinion, i think maybe it’s just life??? idk, like, i understand what you mean, like you feel like you are being tested. because it feels like everything is not going your way. but i think it just takes time. it’s a corny quote, but time is just precious gold. eventually, u will fee like it’s your season. i hope you dont feel alone in this or maybe just a laugh. 😭but ye

That “You are not” section gave Gil Scott Heron “Whitey on the Moon”— I could feel the jazz in the background 😆 “You are not freeing the slaves. You are not doing anything for police brutality. You are not getting black people out of jail. You are not freeing Palestine. You are not helping people decolonize their land. You are not stopping colonization in Africa. You are not feeding the homeless. You are not preventing poverty. You are not even teaching school kids. You are not doing anything in the grand scheme of life.” (The school kids one took me out 😆 )

Ian

The Kandi stray😭😂 totally right though

Chris DeMarzo

I don't know how much you may be interested in astrology, but maybe look into profection years. Sometimes the age year you're in can show what themes are highlighted in your life.

M.O.

I think it’s because we’re so used to fighting our way for everything up top. For everything that we do. It’s exhausting!! 😔

Dani

I was having the “black Hollywood” talk a few months ago with my mom when we were watching 90s black movies & I brought up the question on why they don’t make black movies like this anymore at all? Like seriously, where did the motivation go to make those movies to then cast upcoming, notable black actors?

Jacey

It sounds like you're acing every test though, me thinks you're going to have a blast in your 30s🤔

Rainy Feathers

Well said, we have to sympathize with Da'Vine even if we don't agree, that 'Why can't I have' stuff can't be easy. Also, I too almost fell into the trap of using white spaces to help black people. I thought of all the good I could so as a school counsellor but I didn't think about the destructive protocols, the prejudices hardwired into these systems and all that. I only thought about how I was going to do this and I would help black kids do that. I would've become a damn 'hero' just like I didn't want. I need a different strategy.

Rainy Feathers

Another thing is we're not careful in what we press to be a part of and it never ends well. Everybody knows we're the best at this that and the other but we don't stop to think why we don't get ahead. Anywhere I have to argue my way into or lower myself to get into, I don't want to be there but there are too many who will. They don't realize it's not worth it until they get burned, then they want to come home.

Rainy Feathers

Hey Kenya I think it feels like you’re being tested, because it’s your Saturn return 27 to 30. Which is the time to face your demons.Good luck 🤞

In terms of the Da’Vine Joy Randolph situation I really do think you are right. Although I understand the counter argument to your statement is more rooted in respectability politics and capitalism that our parents/grandparents taught us. This idea that we must assimilate and the obsession with social mobility has been rooted in the black community for generations. Da’Vine also comes from that late gen x/early millennial mindset that I've always found corny. But, I did spend the entire awards season watching a lot of her interviews, both old and new. I used to be a Da’Vine too years ago before I stopped centering myself around white people and this false notion that I need to be in their spaces to make it far. I went to PWIs/Ivy League (not for acting but politics) but at first I had this idea that I needed to be in white spaces in order to “help” black people. Soon I realized no I was being selfish and I just wanted the same access to power and respect my white peers had. I had to decentralize myself from those ideas. However, Da’Vine reminds me of that. She's a theater kid, she went to Yale drama, and she studied Shakespeare at both the University of Oxford and BADA. She can sing Opera. D.C. is very much like Hollywood in how competitive it is. She's a black plus size woman (like me). She wants to be like her white peers. I understand even if I don't think a close proximity to whiteness is going to open doors to black people in Hollywood. But, it must be frustrating to see the people she came up with or who have similar pathways as her prior get to do things she wants to do. Get to work with the prestigious directors, get the awards, etc. When this might be the only time she is able to do it. People are inherently selfish. But, Da’Vine shouldn’t mask what she desires as something that all black people desire/ could benefit from.

That airport tangent made my entire day I’m not even kidding

Trinelle

The Davine portion reminded me of learning about equality in my constitutional law class. There’s this amazing passage we discussed that talks about having to be like white men in order to achieve equality, and why are they viewed as the standard to be achieved. Catherine MacKinnon, ‘Reflection on Sex Equality Under Law’ (1991) 100 Yale Law Journal 1281: ‘Unquestioned is how difference is socially created or defined, who sets the point of reference for sameness, or the comparative empirical approach itself. Why should anyone have to be like white men to get what they have, given that white men do not have to be like anyone except each other to have it?’ (1287)

Hi, it's me again with more Unsolicited Medical Advice™! 👋🏽😀 Two years ago, I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I relate to so much of what you're saying. I found out that the "test" is just anxiety. The warfare is more neurological than spiritual. My therapist explains it as like an overactive fight-or-flight response. The "test" is your triggers, your emotional dysregulation, ruminative responses to stress, irritability, aversion to crowds, overstimulation, etc —the whole nine. Airports are a huge trigger for me and my husband, so we try to practice coping strategies together for when we travel. I would genuinely love to hear you talk more about your mental health, whatever you feel comfortable sharing. And I'm still rooting for you to try therapy one day!

Shelbie Kelly

Ouuuu you just hit on what I been experiencing. It’s really not my season rn. Thanks 😭🙏🏾

re: Da'Vine - you cannot destroy the master's house using the master's tools. her mentality could be applied to politicians who wanna "fix things from the inside" and end up becoming just as corrupt as the establishment. it's just not worth sucking up to a group of ppl who don't care about you for real re: Timberlake - I'm older Gen Z, but I still play NSYNC regularly; I just mentally pretend Justin fell off the face of the earth after the group broke up. serves his ass right for what he did to Britney and Janet!!! re: spiritual warfare - not to get all astro girlie, but maybe you're hitting your saturn return??? apparently, when ppl hit 27-29 y/o, they just go THROUGH IT in all aspects. I feel like I'm hitting mine a few years early lol. maybe we're all just going through it, idk!!!

rudi!!!

i'm so excited for Dev's movie, even though i'm not an action girlie

rudi!!!

Maybe it’s not my place but I don’t think there is a hole in your argument. Some people just don’t care as much about their community as you do. And I’m not saying this is the case for Divine but it is annoying when ppl try to package their own self serving interests with a social cause because they see the power social movements have and they wana bank off of it. Like Just let your supposed “work” speak for itself. Also that last bit about being tested 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 a little triggering, but in a good way I’ve been feeling the same way for a long time and unfortunately unlike you i am feeling less optimistic, but maybe I’m ready to try again loooool.

Efrain

It’s okay Kenya, I don’t have folklore in my life either. Only because my life is very boring 🤣🤣🤣 my nieces, mom, sister all have folklore in their lives and I’m kinda jealous 😭

Dani

The thing is, people don’t want to start small anymore. They think that once they get that one huge opportunity, it’s all smooth sailing from here. Yeahhhh a lot of Black movies are low budget and tiny, etc. etc. but it’s something!! You never know where that little indie movie could take a young Black actor. It’s good to dream to work with the big wigs, but are the big wig movies GOOD?

Dani

Exactly my thoughts

Dani

I love podcasts, so I don't need a video unless you do a grwm 🤷🏾‍♀️ as a movie fan myself, I understand the need to work with white filmmakers that have a certain rapport, but I agree that the goal should also be to create a space where kids in the future name black filmmakers just as people now name Spielberg. As far as Justin, I remember the future sex love sounds era and I loved it. The new album is confusing but not bad imo.

germaninatlanta

The start of 2024 has been trying, i hope you get through this Kenya

Viet Dau

lol the lore tweets are hilarious and like you said I just have ✨trauma✨ 😭😭😭

Lavender1495

I relate deeply to the ‘being constantly tested’ segment. I feel like I have more than enough experience to go live, but I haven’t even been called to the dress rehearsal stage, chile!

carly gill

I enjoy Kenya in any form. Video, audio, I’m consuming the content regardless

Stef

You're not wrong there

Bekah

Hi Kenyaaaa don’t mind the lack of videos, whichever format makes you feel most comfortable is always the best format!! Hope you feel better soon girl xx

Danielle A

Yes yes. Is it okay for her to want to be in a Wes Anderson movie? Yes absolutely, I love that mans movies (his short films this year were so good) but what does that do for us? For her? He certainly wouldn't make her a lead. Wes is actually a perfect director to use for this because you can't even excuse his lack of diversity due to him making biopic movies that are always about white ppl, no. He makes family, friendship, grief/loss films that are whimsical lmao. He has all the opportunity to cast more than one brown person at a time but he often chooses just Dev Patel or just Tony Revolori. Neither of those actors careers he's helped launched in a crazy way btw. Dev has recently directed his own movie that's coming out this year because no one would offer him an action role so he had to MAKE ONE HIMSELF. These white directors may find room to squeeze us in a supporting role, but they won't open the door all the way for us. So to take this opportunity to wish for space in their rooms instead of lifting up black filmmakers is... it just comes across like wanting white filmmakers to "legitimize" us.

Diana

I haven’t had a season since damn near 2019 😭

Kasey Kucera

kenya i thought your lore/trauma was going to be when you hit that pole and thought u were going to jail🤣. sidenote i hope you get through this spiritual warfare and that you and your family are alright 🤍

Liz Huerta

yes to doing it the Toni Morrison way! i always be looking for u in the comments☺️

Kyla

The summer you thought you were going to jail cause ur jeep incident 😭 like girl zoom out a bit, it’s THERE

Dee

even when it do i still be sat like ill listen to mother talk about anything 👏🙌

josh sirrah

lmfao that episode had me dead I was like y’all did what to each other 😭🤣

josh sirrah

Kenyaaaaaaa, I agree bar for bar with the Da’Vine take. I was just having a convo with my man re: Mike Epps saying he needs to “sell out” because he didn’t make the money he needed to by only doing Black movies. It’s buying into the idea that we as Black people (and POC in general) have to get white people’s stamp of approval to be “on”, when they don’t ever have to bring their asses anywhere over here or in non-white media to boost their careers. It’s disheartening af, esp as an artist that truly *only* wants to make art for Black folks. I wish more people got into the Toni Morrison blueprint (iykyk) Re: spiritual warfare, babyyyyyyy who you telling. I’ve been hearing/feeling across the board that these first few months of 2024 ain’t been SWEET but they’ve been necessary. I remember journaling in January that it felt like God was giving me my marching orders and exactly like you said, getting everything outta me just to pour back into me everything I want to me/am meant to become. We gone be aight but know you are not alone by far 🤍 shit, I was just reading up on how to be a better partner while your person is experiencing depression, baby we all going thru it 🫂

JT

Your spiritual warfare/having your season segment reminded me of the band Haim’s song “Lost Track.” It speaks to some of your sentiments I think.

Alesia Odare

i can never forget tht storytime 😭 fully sprayed in the eyes on a weekday

Kyla

But if the Spice Girls do a U.S. reunion tour, that's a different story!

Orneno Wright

Googling spiritual warfare is crazy Kenya 😭😭 I hope this passes QUICKLY for you 😭😭 your lore is you and yo man water boarding each other just to see ? spraying pepper spray just to test it out?

Dee

Older millennial here🙋🏾‍♀️ I was in middle school and high school at the height of N Syncs career, I promise you I don't care about their reunion tour 😂 I think I've reached my limit on the nostalgia core.

Orneno Wright

Spiritual warfare segment had me tickled😭

Vanessa Carlos

Finally, someone who shares my thoughts about the “I want to be in “different” movies as a black actor”. Bc all I hear is “I dont wanna be in low budget/Tyler Perry movies and play stereotypical black roles or slave movies” which, to an extent I can understand but like…. What does that say abt how we think black art is valued? Its giving very talented tenth, respectibility politics. Why not uplift up and coming black directors? Or black screenwriters who are trying to put more creative stories out there? the idea that proximity whitness = better is so clearly based in white supremacy, its just not the tea. I could not agree more with your points on this!! Its something i could talk about for hours on end. Also mr timberlake can go right to hell, his last valid project was the 20/20 experience and i think Trollz being his last real gig is his punishment for all the nasty behavior over the years. I remember his first rebrand attempt with him standing in some wheat field and my man was like “justin timberlake is white now?” 😭 The last bit abt having a season is so real, i just hit my season for the first time since college and it’s such a different energy than when I was out of it for the past few years. Im wishing that your season comes with all of the things you’ve been building on, we been with you in your season and rocking w/ you through it 🙌🏾🩷 also omg sorry this comment keeps getting longer and longer, the adhd and excitment got me goin today 😂

Kyla

Justin Timberlake need to open for Usher’s next Vegas show if he needs coin.

Keith Primas

kenya lore is when you were fighting the apple sauce bandit in your book vlog

titi

I’m heeeeere with you re: Da’Vine take but before I unpack it in another comment, y’all gone get enough of coming for the mic. Keep it cute 🫶🏾

JT

Justin Timberlake cheated on Jessica?? When did this happen? Who has the T

Rashundra Taylor

Justin Timberlake be up there dressed like Mr. Shuester. And be dancing like him too 😭

Gwendolyn Hampton

u know ur going through it when you start googling spiritual warfare 😭 burn some palo santo 🫶🏾

aiyonna

I relate to that section so hard though. Like why is there so much weight on my shoulders and mental debilitation. Free meeee

Laila

I’m so sorry but as soon as you said you looked up spiritual warfare I giggled 😭 Like same, but I was not expecting that

Laila

As someone who is black and wants to become an actress, this podcast was very insightful! Thank you Kenya ❤️

holyrosé🔪

I’m sorry I kind of fell out at spiritual warfare .

Ola Ogun

Hope things get better for you and your family. That part of your podcast really spoke to me. I feel the same way often.

Emylee Bella

I never realized selfish is just a lesser version of not a bad thing

ann

We love you KENYA. Take your time boo! 😘😘 Also, I want certain artists to pull a Sade and at some point, stop making new music. We don’t want it. Most fans pay attention to the first several albums anyway. There are a few exceptions like Mariah, Beyonce, etc but like, most artists become redundant after a certain point and everything just comes forced. Am I crazy for thinking this?! 🤷🏾‍♂️

Gabriel Benton

we as black people cannot infiltrate anything predominantly white because of systematic racism. that’s why i will always watch my tubi black movies! the problem isn’t that we need to be in white spaces, we just need to make black spaces bigger. boommm

Tyy Li

Margot Robbie also did Babylon with Brad Pitt😐. I know Kenya goes up for that movie, but if the category is allegations…especially those proven to be true…

C

Love when you talk about film cuz I be watching all the “in” movies weeks maybe months later

Lavender1495

Luckily for me I don’t mind the podcasts :)

Lavender1495

Alastor from Hazbin Hotel: I know people aren’t going up for Justin Timberlake in 2024. Check that show out on Amazon Prime. We got renewed for season 2!

C

I saw the title and clicked so fast. I felt the same way when I saw her interview. Those white directors don’t see us in their stories, we have to keep creating our own. Whiteness ain’t saving nobody!

Adrenaline17

A good day for us the mic isnt killing my eardrums 😭
