2025-09-04 22:28:52 +0000 UTCI always saw this film as a 90-minute episode of the television series. That’s what I think Shatner was aiming for. There were a lot of problems including a writer’s strike which affected this movie. It gets a lot of bad reviews, but I don’t think it’s THAT bad. Still, I’m so glad they didn’t end with this as Part 6 is so much better.

Here are some side notes based on your reaction to this movie: * On ships cloaking, why Federation didn't have it while its enemies- Klingons and Romulans - have them? Starfleet's core values revolve around exploration, diplomacy, and openness, not stealth or deception. The creator, Gene Roddenberry, stated that his vision of a utopian society wouldn't "sneak around". * As for running out of ideas, that's not the case. Star Trek for both TOS and TNG, and most movies, tell stories based on humanity issues and contemporary allegory. The question of "is there God?" obviously fit as a perennial debated question. ST VI will mirror another contemporary allegory of that time. * ST V is the worse rated ST movies out of all 13. But as one reactor says (PiB), if fall in love with the crew like intimate family, then any time spent with them is good time. The bantering, especially where Bones being so sarcastic, is part of memorable fun. Look forward to your ranking after ST VI!
