Reportedly, this film has been credited for saving the whale population. Interesting that we got both parents from “7th Heaven” in “Star Trek” films. My Mom and sister used to watch that show back in the day. It was good until Jessica Biel left and the dad started having hallucinations he was Elvis.

Glad Mary enjoyed it! I'll offer some (hopefully) interesting side notes:
* Formerly U.S.S.R. actually allowed this movie to be shown!
* Consistent with Star Trek's story to contemporary allegory, whale hunting was a big issue. This movie made a lot of impact around the world as it was the highest grossing prior to 2009. Today, Humpback whales are long removed from the endangered species list.
* Scotty voice commanding the first generation (1984) Apple Macintosh is really funny because voice control not possible on retail computers.
* The replacement U.S.S. Enterprise as registry NCC-1701-A. This is the third iteration of the Enterprise. The original TOS 1701 Enterprise is just called "TOS Enterprise". The first movie - The Motion Picture - has visibly non-round nacelles and is known as "Enterprise Refit". This replacement is called "Enterprise-A". If you continue your journey, you'll iterations of Enterprise ships that follows "Enterprise-" format.

Much of the comedy in the movie derives from the crew finding themselves in unfamiliar surroundings, akin to ... a fish out of water.
(I'm sorry. And yes, I know.)
