I remember being upset a little my fist time. I was 15 or 16 and still had yet to experience real love myself (feels good to know I wasn't the only one LOL). But twenty years later, been in good relationships and not so good ones I get it. She has a kid and I am sus of how the husband kept her from seeing him at the airport and the kid wasn't an infant. So maybe two at the youngest? Kelly must've still been grieving and holding out hope when she began a relationship with this guy, which makes me think that their marriage was based on an unexpected pregnancy and while this husband of hers wasn't the love of her life he was an okay runner up. Because you could TELL the only thing keeping her from running away with Tom Hanks was her kid. And priorities. But the resilience Tom Hank's character shows throughout just all of it! It's the kind you need if you're going to survive. I think the smarts and skills he used to grasp the search area of 500,000 miles also helped. It's a reality check. Be optimistic but also don't fool yourself either. Really great review and Mary you hit on a lot of the same stuff I felt when watching it a second time, and also had to step away and blow my nose. Because for that to happen with the love of your life? But like his character said you just have to keep going and breathing. Don't lose hope. That's what I take away from this film.

The island was Monuriki, Fiji island chain. Not based on a true story but inspired by true stories of survivors of plane crashes in the ocean after ditching. One such miracle was a lone survivor who clung to a section of debris for 9 hours before being rescued on the Indian ocean. I'm pleasantly surprised you picked this film because a single character is hard to do a reaction to but Aunt Mary did a great job. Wait. Two characters. Forgot about Wilson. I'm sure others feel the same as I, when Mary cries I tear up too. She has a Masters! Not surprising. It's rare that a story analyst like her allows herself to suspend analysis and just dive in all empathy. My jobs at Disney and MGM similiar. I had to market films to the video/DVD trade in an analytical way as to why they will profit to the demographic intended. Then to the consumer. I promoted Moonstruck and Rain Man at MGM/UA (when United Artists was under the same umbrella). Mary would LOVE both of those films. And "Cruella" of course.
