The show kind of tricks everyone by making it seem like Ben's boss at the newspaper was working for Fisk. It's a really good misdirect by the writers. It's kind of sad that Ben died thinking his friend betrayed him, but he didn't. In the last episode toward the end when Fisk is freed from the FBI transport, the guys who freed him aren't cops, they do kind of look like cops but they're not wearing any markings. They seem to be private mercenaries working for Fisk. The FBI guys managed to kill a couple of them before they die. I have to wonder how much Fisk was paying them for that attack.
