He does not shoot that boy; He beats the handicapped teenage boy to death with the butt of his rifle in front of his mother, and then he does the same to her offscreen. After killing the boy, he expresses delight at his exposed brain matter. He was a Sadistic SOB. The two parts of the movie that made me the madest were the men violating the young girls and the death of Elias.

Rich people were often exempt from conscription during the war because usually the US government didn't draft people who were going to college/university. At the time much fewer people went to college compared to now so it was usually just the upper class. So the wealthy young people had an easy way out that poor and middle class kids didn't at the time. That one guy who sucked up to Barnes the who movie and survived was one of the main doctors in the sitcom Scrubs, Dr. Cox. Kieth David played the guy who got out just before the battle started, he was in the movie The Thing where he survived till the end, and he was in the last season of the sitcom community, he played Elroy. He's been in a lot of stuff. Oh and he voiced the president of the US in rick and morty.
