I know the best thing about this episode is Toph unlocking metalbending, but I think the second best is the part about grief and love. The writers and animators don't sugarcoat the fact that Aang lost A LOT. His grief is immense. But the message about it is super mature and non-preachy, which is very refreshing. I always roll my eyes when a show says that someone you lost is still with you, 'cause no they're not, that's the whole point! Instead, Guru Pathik explains that the LOVE of the people you lost is what remains. That seems like only a small difference but it is so much more helpful when it comes to acceptance and healing from grief. The loss is real, you can't change that, and it hurts because you loved. But that doesn't mean you're incapable of love now, or that you should not express it. It's a beautiful lesson for kids and adults alike, and the way the show portrays it brings a tear to my eyes every time.
