French Revolution is a revolt against hierarchy as a social institution. The Church is part of that, but not the only part. Just saying "lol new violence" is not sufficient. Also, first mass mobilization my butt. The Crusades say hi.

Japanese are much more conscious of how they are perceived by those around them. Koreans are very hierarchical and abuse of subordinates in public view is much more normal. In other words, Japanese hit each other in their hotel rooms
