I’d put money on if when you’re in CD mode on that Philips but connected to the Phono output (when it doesn’t work) that if you had hand turned the record it would have played (thus why it audibly slowed down when you changed mode) as I get the feeling phono mode switch means the cartridge’s output is then directly wired to the jacks, much like any other ‘regular’ turntable is. (If you know what I mean).
