Patreon Update VIDEO Odd-cast July 2023

This is the video version of the July '23 odd-cast.

Random and mostly unconnected topics, covered in a loose and unprofessional manner.

https://youtu.be/bTTJtXjxjdU

There is an audio only version of this update available in a separate post.

If anyone has the ability (and desire) to view a 3D MPO format photo taken with the Panasonic DMC-3D1 camera, I’ve attached an example at the bottom of this post.

Take care.

I've found that the little buggers will nibble on magnetic tape when the get desperate enough!

Arthur Robillard

The mice we've (reluctantly) entertained are good at hiding behind the stove where the cats can't reach. They are patient, however, and eventually get their pray. Rocky, my oldest, is the only one who goes out, and as much as I try to discourage his hunting of critters, he still insists. But it's only the heads he's interested in; I guess he feels that if he eats it, he will absorb the critter's knowledge? Enjoy your trip. Boston is my home.

Arthur Robillard

Sony stopping products while Philips still selling mini cassettes lol.

Simon van Wees

I just love the bit about meeting up with that guy, and how you're an introvert perfectly happy in your own world. You described it so eloquently!

Michael Jordan

Chewing on wires would be a reasonable excuse to look for a mouse 🐁 behind stereo rack 😁

Jørn Birkeland Rosengren

I’ve seen the odd video but i tend to watch easier going fun videos.

Techmoan

I love Casey... from camera conspiracies... almost as much as his never ending dietry changes. He really nails the viewpoints on Cameras. Do you watch Lois Rossman?

Ant Wakefield

I could get paid for the embedded versions - but the percentage of Patreon viewers is so small that I tend to only turn on the adverts when the video goes live. If someone is a patreon they’ve donated way more than I could earn from making them endure the adverts.

Techmoan

It's sad that 'The Internet' has devolved into social media; chatrooms and forums seemed infinitely more 'social' to me (although they obviously had their own problems). I haven't used social media for years and i'm not about to start again anytime soon. I've even given up youtube recently because its equivalent of doomscrolling is just as depressing. Question: do you still get paid by youtube for views on these embedded videos?

Sam Parsons

"The Tasteless Foodie" has a certain charm to it 😄

Justin

I have the same introvert/hermit situation going on and because the world is run by extroverts I have been miserable in many situations and couldn't really explain it other than thinking I'm a bit weird. But then the pandemic and the lockdowns happened and all of a sudden everybody else was forced to live their lives in the way I like to do and seeing those extroverts climbing up their walls was actually quite satisfying to watch. My whole life I was forced to live in their world, and now for one or two years they were forced to live in my world "You are welcome! Understand me now?"

Jochen Römling

Look what you made me do? (Jk i know It was my choice). I GOT THE COLOR CHANGING HEAD :). I love it! THANKS for highlighting it!

chris cunningham

There used to be Tim Hortons all over the Midwest but almost all of them closed. I did see an open one in Michigan when I went up there last month - really took me by surprise since I thought all of the US locations were all gone. The one that used to be in my neighborhood in Minneapolis is now a pho place, but you can still see the shadow of the old Tim Hortons signs on the walls. Pretty funny actually. (And very good pho.)

Daniel Aufmann

To solve the mystery, I had deleted the CES question because although I obviously like to comment on your videos, I try to keep questions to one-per. I hadn't realized you'd instantly be notified but that makes sense. It is true... I can't think of the last piece of technology in general that i was really curious about or interested enough to look into. Perhaps the early consumer 3D printers.

David Fulton

Thanks for the Patreon video, Mat. I always enjoy them immensely. BTW for anyone who can't get enough food-related content, I highly recommend Sandwiches of History on YT.

OzRetrocomp

Thanks.

Techmoan

Thank you for the update, very interesting as always. Regarding the food items section, I can personally say at least that I definitely find them interesting, and worthy of keeping :).

Haydn Rowlands

The comments are playing up as I can see in my emails that you wondered if I was interested in CES…but that message isn’t shown here. To answer it though… fifteen or twenty years ago I’d probably have loved to pay it a visit. I used to enjoy reading the write ups on the internet and in magazines. I stopped reading those a few years ago because nothing interesting was being shown any more and I don’t expect those shows will be around for much longer. But yes back in the pre-internet days they would have been quite the experience.

Techmoan

My favourite noodles are easily UFOs, but they're quite pricey in the UK. Video Oddest as usual one of my monthly highlights. Thanks Mat!

RE: Not doing FB Threads (or social media in general). Now that I've reached a certain age I've come to realize that "old people" sometime eschew "The New" (whatever it is) because, frankly, they aren't sparked by something that is similar to the thing that already exists. It's not shiny and exotic. But when you're young, that context isn't there. I can recall when CDs came out and being super impressed but for my mom's generation, it's just a small, silver record. Now, eventually the convenience factor kicked in and that gen did eventually adopt the CD but I don't think it was because they were blown away by the novelty, they were just contending with the fact that they more or less had to accept that record players were going extinct (at least in the sense that a "new model" wouldn't be available at Sears next Christmas). This seems to be where I am (and maybe Mat, too) with advances in the way social media is presented. To me, Twitter was just more or less just two-way graffiti or a marketing tool. And Facebook was just email and a message board. Boring to me. But I can see how those technologies would be interesting if they were your first entry into mass communication with friends and strangers. Those of us who remember Prodigy, Compuserve, and AOL Online can attest to the thrill of giving and receiving messages for the first time. Or getting a link to a bootleg episode of South Park that took 90 minutes to download.

David Fulton

The irony is that someone could, today, bid on an NOS "My First Sony" on eBay and say, "I just purchased My First Sony and my last Sony today."

Grace Robbins

What the heck do people do for seven days out on the open sea? https://ibb.co/5cf2Pq2 😴 Avoid iceburgs I hope. P.E.I., of Anne of Green Gables fame, and Nova Scotia - I've always wanted to go there, but no doubt it isn't as exciting as I imagine it.

Grace Robbins

Mat, love your updates. As for Sony, I'm a big fan of their camera sensors. My Nikon D850 and Zfc both have Sony sensors. They continue to innovate in this area. It's too bad they're tailing off their audio player offerings. I remember when the "My First Sony" line came out. Those were the days.

Bruce Grembowski

hahaha the ending made me laugh, I love these videos. Enjoy your vacation and keep up the good work until then :)

Junky

I have got really depressed about 3D because I have a "gammy" eye and have a blobby bit in the middle of my left eye - and some awful burn marks that show up because of some very very bad attempts to "fix" my vision (thanks useless doctors). The upshot is I don't think I can see 3D … but yo've given me hope that I can! I'll have to try it out!

Amro

I think I’ve got all the music I want now. I’ve definitely got more than I’ll ever really find the time to play, so I’ve had to stop myself picking up any more.

Techmoan

I liked those tuna salad things when I worked as a service tech. Keep one in the car in case you get stuck somewhere doing an urgent job.

Kate Cole

I wonder if watching people eat on video is some generational thing. It's totally passed me by in any case. I don't mind your food clips but if you never made another one... although it is somewhat interesting to see what rubbish processed food other First-World countries are putting down their pipes. MAT - when you travel, do you record shop? Record shopping and book shopping are among my absolute favorite activities whilst traveling across a region. Bit hectic getting everything BACK home, but otherwise it so much more satisfying than a snowglobe!

David Fulton

"And if mice aren't finding their way into your home, a cat will go out where they are and carry them inside personally." They never mentioned that on the cat brochure...

Andy Ihnatko

I suggested trying an external drive on an X-Box. If it uses an OS based on Windows it should probably work. The main point about external drives is that they are small and cheap enough to stock up on. Will we be able to buy CD drives for the foreseeable future which, ignoring quality issues that seems to be the case with cassette and record decks, or will they go the way of VHS decks where manufacturing stopped completely in 2016 ?

Duncan

Dogs have owners, cats have servants. Having rescued a couple of mice using it I can recommend the Trixie live mouse trap. Unfortunately we had another bird on Thursday night. Regarding Frogs be aware that apparently they can hold their breath for over 30 minutes. I still feel bad about the one I might have buried alive. Since learning that they go to the side of the local stream.

Duncan

That sounds great! I've had some great times in unfamiliar cities, operating under the "I only have a few hours, total" restriction. One's goals shift from "I'm going to do grand, canonical things that leave me feeling as though I've undergone a spiritual renaissance" to "I am going to have simple experiences, and I am going to savor them as only moments of daily life can be savored. If I'm very lucky, I might even see a cute dog." I hope you and the missus enjoy our little Puritan fishing colony!

Andy Ihnatko

Oh yes, if it doesn't like you, it's quite hopeless. But I think the cat is also looking out for you, if you treat it right. It seems to view me as an equal and expects to be treated likewise. I haven't seen any frogs or toads though. Probably because there aren't many around. But yes, lots of fetathered remains.. Insurance? Hmm, perhaps interesting to consider.. My gib (is that what a neutered male cat is called?) Jeroentje gets into fights all the time. He has SO many war scars. I only go to the vets now when he feels hot and/or I smell the distinct smell of inflammation... Still, I wouldn't want to live without them.. They are like children I suppose...

Bas van Schooten

One of the major issues I have with the touch screen units specifically is awful the screen resolutions are. I think even digital photo frames are beyond 800x480 now but car head units from major manufacturers aren't.

Matt Tester

Woo Canada! I'm in Calgary, but don't fall into this satirical article's example : https://www.thebeaverton.com/2019/08/european-relatives-visiting-toronto-say-theyd-love-to-drive-and-see-the-rocky-mountains-while-theyre-here/ :P I'd wish to be able to fly out and meet, but having seen above, there are itineraries involved :P I've done a lot of road trips where basically nothing was planned so maybe that's more my style right now. Having to figure out how to pack things in feels .. burdensome? Not sure if that exactly fits my thoughts.. But maybe I just keep taking trips where I have no major checklist item I want to see. As for food here, you have poutine on your list, but if you have a Costco card, you can shop at any around the world and Costco does a very decent baseline poutine. It's quite large for a single person perhaps. It's my lazy way of knowing what good poutine places are nearby since I guess I don't know how to find them otherwise. I did get a chance to go to La Banquise in Montreal last year which was something I had looked into 20 years ago so it was good to check that off and Costco's cheese curds don't squeak so finding those for maximum authenticity is probably pretty difficult :P Costco probably doesn't count as being in accessible places for a tourist though. I'd tell you to get maple syrup, but sugary.. So ketchup chips! All Dressed is "ok" :P Ketchup is the real thing :P I'd also tell you about Coffee Crisps and your strange Toffee Crisps confuse me :P I hope you have a great trip and have some interesting stories to share in a future video.

PKFC

I was frustrated one time in Michigan where all I had left for cash was a $5 Canadian bill and tried getting a donut in a Tim Hortons thinking "as a Canadian embassy, they must take Canadian currency".. Nope... And that's despite basically any Tim Hortons in Canada able to take American currency at an exchange rate.. Even the one I stopped in in Yellowknife, NT D:

PKFC

Re: Cat ownership. I think you'll find you don't own the cat, more that the cat decides to own you :) As a keeper of cats for 20+ years your story about the mouse incident had me nodding my head. The list of animals ours have brought in the house include; Field Mice, Frogs, Toads, a Pigeon, a Magpie and various other feathered things. The fun we've had deal with all those, many were still alive. And just this week one of our cats Poppy, was in a fight overnight which meant I had to take her to the vet to get checked out and that cost £560. Fortunatley she was just a bit battered and bruised and luckily we have insurance!

Mark Elliott

That’s exactly the kind of suggestion I’m looking for- it’s now on the list.

Techmoan

Be sure to try our Canadian all dressed chips (crisps). Ruffles brand or Covered Bridge offer the best versions. Assuming you end up close enough to a supermarket or convenience store.

John Johnson

Wonderful, as always Mat - thank you! I recently went on my first summer holiday taking only my iPhone 14 as a camera, and it really worked very well - I found not having to take spare batteries, chargers and memory cards very liberating. I am half thinking about something like a Fjorden grip/adapter - my internal jury is still out on that one. Completely agree with you about not needing other people around - I think some people are completely unable to occupy themselves; I seriously wonder if 'sociable' people don't have any interior dialogue with themselves going n all the time! Since I retired, I cannot for the life of me imagine how I managed to fit a full time job into my life. Wat Kitchen? Who's On First? - I think a career in comedy videos could be just around the corner for you, Mat!

Roland Bogush

I'm in the UK, and have never even heard of Tim Horton! Sounds like an actor. I often link to photos I've uploaded to hosting sites, as there's no other way to embed one in the comments here.

Brad Jones

I can go the other route and only eat stuff with a long expiry date. Not as exciting perhaps.

Techmoan

Keep up with the food reviews. Just don't go down the Ashens route and try out-of-date stuff! It just seems incredibly sad that today's generation have lost that "going out to buy the new album by [whoever]" feeling. (I believe there's a popular music artist called Ned Sherrin or something). You can't wrap a stream up for a Christmas present either. As I said on an earlier update, I like the order, chronology, design of disc spines, being a former librarian. And please keep doing the audio versions, they were a great comfort to me in hospital last year.

Brad Jones

These updates are great. Funny, interesting, relaxing ways to spend time. No nonsense, no hype, no elevated heart rate. YouTube Zen.

CBits Tech

Thanks Mat, you reminded I have a Wat Kitchen Chicken in Teriyaki sauce in my cupboard I haven't tried. I still have until March next year though, so no rush 😁

Retro Graveyard

Given my aversion to downloading potentially dodgy ZIP files - I wouldn’t want to put that risk on anyone else. It is a MPO file so any conversion is being done at the point of download. Unless I’m mistaken MPO files contain two JPEG’s, so perhaps your browser is ‘helpfully’ auto-extracting it for you.

Techmoan

I have a couple more, maybe I’ll add them as a stand alone extra.

Techmoan

I believe we’re just there for a few hours and the Mrs has already planned an itinerary, but it’s very kind of you to offer. I’ve heard you’re an unofficial tour guide for the library. When Ralf came to my local town, I had to advise him there was nothing there worth seeing, so we went to a pub...and not a great one.

Techmoan

It worked for me as a .MP0 by default. Maybe try manually forcing the extension when you save?

naota3k

The file downloads as a JPEG. You should have put it in a ZIP archive to let us download verbatim.

Erkin Alp Güney

I, too spent a couple of weeks capturing mice in live traps in my house. I'd check the traps in the morning and sometimes found one waiting quite patiently for me to come around and release it, like a kid who knows quite well that the cops don't throw the book at a teenager for skateboarding in a prohibited area and he's only being held until his Mom can come to pick him up. However, one mouse panicked and got his wee little pink nose JAMMED in one of the trap's air holes. Inside the trap: mouse. Outside the trap: an almost perfect round pink velvety bulb. My attempts to push its nose back through the hole resulted in a flurry of squeaky protests. So fifteen minutes later, there I was, cross-legged on a patch of leaves in the nature preserve, using a hacksaw blade to cautiously nibble away at the plastic until the nose, and the mouse behind it, was free. It struck me of course that this mouse didn't understand that there are very few humans who would have gone to so much trouble. So, on that basis, I tried not to be too offended that the mouse skittered off into the brush without even thanking me.

Andy Ihnatko

Hey, if you and the missus have time to spend in Boston, I'd love to meet up...!

Andy Ihnatko

Mat, I too enjoy the food video segments--looks like tasty stuff to me and it's interesting to note the variety of those things you have available over there. I also appreciate that you delete the "money shots" from those segments. Your other noodle videos got me to liking those Cup noodles, but those things are terribly high in sodium, so I enjoy them sparingly and I hope you're not getting excessive sodium in your diet from those meals--at least they seem to be low in carbs (something I'm strictly limiting in my diet these days as well).

Mark Hesse

Our Canadian friends may cry foul, but you definitely can get a poutine-like product here in the USA. Also, there was a Tim Horton's that started up here in central MN a few years ago--built a new structure for it and everything, but it went out of business in less than a year and has sat abandoned ever since.

Mark Hesse

You definitely need to do a video on the new toaster. You know, I've heard there was a guy who's now a famous YouTube celeb who got his start years ago with only a single video showing a toaster making toast. The fellow's name escapes me at the moment, but toaster videos area a guaranteed hit!

Mark Hesse

I feel the same way about Aldi (and Lidl). I've been to an Aldi in Manchester and one in Cork. The interior design is very similar to what we have here. Even the floor tiles look familiar 😁 Apropos Canada: Ten years ago, I was in Vancouver on a business trip and tried to order a porridge with maple syrup at a Tim Hortons. Only to find that they were out of maple syrup… probably as cliché as sauerkraut is over here.

Tunix

I was hoping for a third section.....

Kris Luedke

I really enjoyed the cat food sub-plot in the food reviews. "I've never eaten cat food, that I know of." To , "that cat food doesn't seem that bad".

Kris Luedke

Oh we cleaned the place it had been hiding - moved the cupboard, mopped everything. Fortunately it was only there a few hours in total. I was afraid it’d die under a cabinet…or perhaps move in. We’re going to be more careful checking the cat before letting it just run in when it’s dark. As for camera conspiracies, he’s still going, but I think he’s a frustrated as I am with the lack of cool new cameras to talk about.

Techmoan

I like the food video bits, it breaks up the main part nicely. I have issues with what food I can consume for various medical reasons, which ends up with me mostly eating a limited set of very bland foods. So someone else enjoying things I'll never eat is quite interesting. On the subject of the mouse, you might want to hoover and clean the area it was hiding. Even if it was there for a short time, it would have dropped a pellet or two and regular intervals as it moved around. Is the camera conspiracy guy still going? I use to watch him a lot years ago, I liked the imagining of Canon etc product development meetings skits he did.

Josette Reynolds

I’ve swapped it out for their foodi 3-in-1 toaster due mostly to a lack of space, but also because the Mrs has difficulty with any kind of toaster that doesn’t have the traditional pop up/plunger lever.

Techmoan

Also, the disappearing of the audio components like CD players also worries me, as I like them a lot. So we'll have to keep the older ones going for longer. Sony also used to build pretty good small loudspeakers until last year I think, but not even those anymore. Pity!

Bas van Schooten

The Potpourri has to be checked out, it's one of the highlights of the week!

David Peaker

Ah yes, sorry about that. Cats are wonderful, playful and beautiful I think. I love them dearly. But the mouse part (or worse, birds), hmm. That special cat even catches the bats that live onder my roof. And yes, when they start eating the mice, I walk away quickly. YUK! Still, the reason why she brings the mice in, is that the youngest cat stays in the house (busy street in front of the house, so I built a catio). But the older cat still goes outside at night (otherwise she gets really annoying). So the older cat brings the mice for the younger cat, as she can't do that herself. Kind of nice, and also really not ;)

Bas van Schooten

Unfortunately I’ll have to leave this option to other people with better eyesight.

Techmoan

The unpasteurized cheese curds are the key ingredient, but yeah, it's soggy chips. I'd suggest seafood related things on the east coast.

Lowpass

"Easiest" way to watch 3D today: Get a 4K projector (most of them still support 3D) and a roll up projection screen mounted to the ceiling. The screen should go down in front of the TV so the speakers are still in the right place.

Robert

Yes we got a similar cat why can't she kill them before bringing as a present. Fortunately as she got older they have got less

Retro Nick

I definitely fall into the target market. It’s really the Mrs who wants one, I’ll no doubt have a nibble…but for obvious reasons I’ll give a whole one a miss. I’m open to any other recommendations though, of course poutine will be on the menu too…but that’s much the same as chips and gravy here but with added cheese.

Techmoan

Invented in Ottawa, where I reside. It's tourist food, but fine if you want a big sugary donut with no hole.

Lowpass

I didn't know Tim Hortons were in the UK until I read this entire post thread.

Grace Robbins

I like the iPhone cases with the integrated screen protector and camera protector and built-in MagSafe. They are dustproof and waterproof to IP68. Otterbox make a nice one, but cheaper ones are available. It isn't bad value when you don't have to buy and fit a separate screen and camera protector.

Gadgetman

I've never been to Canada even though I live in North America. But one day I will, and I'll eat poutine and Tim Hortons.

Grace Robbins

I was surprised to see a package of Tim Horton's (presumably) coffee in his cupboard ...

Peter Laws

I use the Ninja Flip Oven to make toast, using the Toast setting. It works really well, and for those who don't know it toasts both sides at the same time, and you can easily add extra time by turning the knob. I've noticed in the Oddcasts that you still have yours in the kitchen.

Gadgetman

Have you seen the cats eat the mice? The sound alone made me nauseous as a child.

Grace Robbins

Hahah can just imagine you trying to catch this mouse like on a looney tunes video.

Ant Wakefield

I was with you on this - well maybe not terrified, but I’d notice if it felt weird or unresponsive and it’d annoy me. I’m happy to say with this one it operates, looks and feels exactly the same as before. The only difference is that the smooth pebble like transition from the screen to the metal case now has a boundary that you could feel when you run a thumb across it - but once it’s in the bumper case you can’t touch this area anyway so it ends up feeling exactly the same as a regular phone in the same case.

Techmoan

I’m terrified that screen protectors would damage the oleophobic coating - they also always seem to feel worse, less smooth, or pick up more fingerprints. I despair at every new mark on my new phones screen though.

ASBR

You’re not doing a great job of selling the idea of cat ownership.

Techmoan

I suspect a food review channel from someone who can’t taste the food is probably not going to be a hit. I suppose it’s got a unique hook though.

Techmoan

Yes, east coast…the cruise ship stops when it hits land, but I’m going to Quebec. I’m going to get a Beaver Tail and then come home.

Techmoan

I can answer a few of these - I’ll continue to click on the potpourri because it comes from a trusted source, so no issue there. The door next to the sanitiser is just a small under stairs cupboard, when the houses were built this was where the oil fired central heating boiler was. Now it’s where the tumble dryer (and a few thousand plastic carrier bags) live. The espresso maker went as it was never used…I’m more of a mug of coffee chap. It’s very handy having the microwave up there though.

Techmoan

• I volunteer to be your unpaid personal assistant who does your hair/makeup, buys your lunch noodles, goes to the Post Office, takes care of Bee's Knees in your absence, and pretty much all the extraneous, tedious, and petty things you shouldn't have to do. This is actually a selfish suggestion, because I am tired of my current life track and want to do something completely different, in a different country. Now forget I wrote all that, 'cause it'll never happen anyway even though it'd be awesome. 🫤 • Stupid nosy questions: Do you have a yellow automobile, or is it just the lighting? Is the door in your kitchen (next to the sanitizer dispenser) for a pantry or a laundry under the staircase? You removed your espresso maker? • Yum, noodles. I enjoyed this, because I can't eat very many carbohydrates right now. Gonna snag your Dunkin' Donuts. • Your house would be a favorite food source in a zombie apocalypse. • You're not the only one perspiring like crazy this summer; I would rather have the winter... or your temperatures right now... instead of the 80s. • My family thinks I should meet and mingle with others. I don't get the point; maybe they're worried when I get old and decrepit there will be nobody around to take care of me. Or care about me. I totally understand your concern on links. Will you still look at the Potpourri? Don't answer that. Take care, good buddy. 🤍

Grace Robbins

Well, my cat is one of those special ones, and she brings mice inside just about every night. Sometimes she actually kills and eats them. More often they just run around the house because the cat got bored and just let it go. I even had 2 of them nibbling my hair when sleeping. So I guess you're quite lucky 😂

Bas van Schooten

I like the food parts. It's like having a conversation (even though it's one way, from you to us) and switching briefly topic. I've never been able to experience 3D, I'm cross-eyed so... because of reasons... I can only see with one eye at the time, never with both eyes concurrently and I haven't hence developed the ability to see 3D (neither with fancy technology, nor in real life). You mention that your blind spot gets better in dim light: this might have to do with mesopic vision, when other light sensing cells are activated.

ENP

Everyone here's going on holiday in 5 weeks - apart from me. Ibiza is likely to hot and sunny for me. Still, saves money on the cattery bills - for 4 it's about £30 a day. I look forward to the mewling at 4am ("HUMAN! I care NOTHING for your rest pattern. FEED ME NOW!") and assorted chewed up rodents and birds in the kitchen. Apart from that it will be peace and quiet. I've bought a load of 70s cop show DVDs and I may even find time to fix that JVC KD-A33 cassette deck I've had since January 2021. Who needs people, eh? Talking of "eh", for the next food segment you should try Kraft macaroni and cheese. It'll be good practice for when you go to Canada.

Matthew Lawrenson

It’s at the tip - I much prefer the new one, I’m really glad the old one went faulty otherwise I’d never have got this one. However I’m pretty sure you’re right in that it’ll have been a stuck raisin - it’ll be the Mrs with her posh toast. I’ll keep an eye on this in the future.

Techmoan

You may have already ordered a new toaster, but if you're interested in why a toaster might trip the breaker, here's a short video that explains it and an easy fix https://youtu.be/LVAhilKsn3I

SheddyIan

I think we should all throw more bananas at windows in future 👍🏻🤣

drnickyp

I wonder if there's room for a spin-off channel where you demonstrate and taste various foodstuffs? Foodmoan?

SheddyIan

Various parts of Canada? That's where I live. Assuming you'll be on the east coast? Pretty, but if you ever get a chance, checkout Montreal.

Lowpass

The comments about USB drives were regarding ripping CDs to PCs. For this video I was interested in playing CDs. This is what’s going away - CD players are vanishing. I’m sure I’ll always be able to find something to rip a CD for as long as I’m alive. I don’t recall any comments about attaching a USB drive to a console, I’d probably have skimmed past them as it wouldn’t work due to a lack of drivers.

Techmoan

I’ve always been a bit confused with after market car head units - I couldn’t understand how the car stereo companies survived, as in 35 years of driving and owning many different cars I’ve only ever owned one car that could accommodate a regular DIN stereo. All the other cars have had weirdly shaped built in manufacturer audio systems that if removed would make the dash look broken and unfinished - As for double-DIN, forget it.

Techmoan

I was one of those people who suggested connecting an external USB CD drive to the games consoles. I'd like to explain :-) I think the issue is our misinterpretation of the video's aim. Your aim in making the video was to answer the pragmatic question of whether current game consoles can play CDs. A straightforward binary question. People like me interpreted this in a theoretical way: "Can a current games console be somehow made to play CDs"? Maybe by hacking the system? Maybe by using add-ons? We're not being pedantic here. Videos taking this kind of approach aren't uncommon on YouTube. For example, one of the 8 Bit Guy's most popular videos from a few years ago was whether a really old iPhone can still be used today. Alternatively, some retro channels have looked at whether, say, a Windows XP laptop can still be used today. The answer in each case, of course, is no. Not at all. But often there are hacks and tricks to get close, and this is all part of the fun. I think this is what people like me expected from this video. We expected a kind of fun examination of whether a games console can, by hook or by crook, be made to play audio CDs. And adding in a USB CD drive was just one seemingly obvious way of "hacking" this. They're pretty cheap. And ultimately the CD drive on its own can't play audio, while the games console probably includes a pretty high quality DAC and high quality audio outputs. So, putting the two together might be one way forward in our age of a lack of new CD player hardware.

Tim Hortons! I know they are in the UK now but as a Canadian it’s weird seeing it or it’s products else where.

I've also set a series link for Retro Electro workshop, seems like it should be interesting. For less retro tech, I'm about to buy a Sony XSP-N1BT car head unit to experiment with and see how usable it is these days. It's a cradle head unit, very clever at the time and if it works with an iPhone it'll have a better screen than any aftermarket head unit. Surprisingly, the phone app is still in the App Store.

I did purchase a Pure Elan Connect+ radio after your review of it, and was pleasantly surprised at how well it works as a bedside device. The ability to control it from my iPhone is a nice bonus. I owner a Pure 'The Bug' radio years ago and loved its quirky design and its ability to record onto SD cards, but sadly it eventually stopped working. I bought a Samsung external CD/DVD writer years ago after the CD/DVD slot in my old iMac stopped working, and keep it handy for occasional ripping of CDs. I also have an old ION Tape2PC twin cassette deck which I dusted off and used last year to deal with the remains of my old music collection that had sat in a drawer — quite a few things that I'd not heard in ages! There's also a KAM record player that I connected via a Behringer audio/digital box to my current iMac to check out some old vinyl that I'll probably sell this year. I'm no stranger to discovering that stuff I own is no longer supported by the manufacturer. I had to throw out two Wacom drawing tablets because it was becoming harder and harder to get them working with each new version of macOS — it's a PITA trying to work out which driver software your device needs on their website, partly because they've produced so many of them over the years. Thankfully my current and former printers were both supported directly by macOS, which is probably a blessing. But I'm wary for the future of my beloved Blue Yeti microphone since Logitech bought the company.

I agree about the HT-AX7 - when I see things like that I try to find a reason to buy them. I didn’t think of one this time, but I do appreciate them.

The 3D discussion was interesting as I just bought a Meta Oculus 2 off of Mercari (Japan) to try out how well it works. My plan is to try to be able to view the 3D photos and videos off my Fuji FinePix 3D (and the Sharp Aquos SH-12C smartphone which was my first stereoscopic camera back in 2016) but I haven’t gotten around to it as work got really busy. The Mercari purchase was also a bit of a nightmare as it arrived with a defect ("sunburn" on the LCD) and I tried to get a refund but the seller refused (“I will not accept a refund of something that has touched a persons face even once!”) so Mercari just gave me a cash refund without me returning the item… weird… Re: Sony, I was actually a bit heartened when I saw the announcement of their new HT-AX7 speakers as it was kind of a “ah Sony is still occasionally making really weird stuff that makes no sense” kind of moment

That’s fair enough!

I’m a bit scared to try now - they inadvertently tarnished their brand.

Sounds like that was the original one. The hot and savoury ones are completely different - more like a pot noodle but in a bag. Usually some pasta, tofu type chunks and sauce.

I tried Huel once - nearly threw up…something about the texture really turned my stomach. I had to throw out the rest of the ‘introductory pack’. I’m definitely not a porridge chap and I think this crossed the line for me.

Techmoan

Have you tried Huel Hot and Savoury Mat? That’s quite good for “I can’t be bothered to cook but want some food”.

In lieu of anywhere else to really say this, thank you for the tip of looking at Amazon JP for Japanese goods. I was in need of a new Zojirushi insulated travel mug and even with delivery costing roughly the same as the item itself it was far cheaper than the options on Amazon UK.

I hadn’t heard of this app. Oh and glad to hear your doorbell is still working as well as mine. Turned out to be a great buy.

I think you and I are on the same page with the John West tuna stuff (albeit I like peppers). I find the salads are a great thing to keep in the cupboard for lunch or supper but the meatballs were a bit disappointing - not bad by any means just not good as they could be. I suspect that the reason the meatballs are soft is because of the grade of tuna that's used to make them - when you buy tins you tend to get tuna steak, then tuna chunks, then tuna flakes and I think maybe it's even smaller pieces used to make the meatballs. I agree that using chunks the pots like the salads do the pots would be better.

I was wasting time with the Akinator app and it guessed who you were and it only took 2 guesses. Damn your front door bell lol. I always get the knee-jerk reaction to run off to answer mine. I love not leaving the house and never meeting people. I get so much done and don't have people/friends interrupting me. Hermit and proud. I have what I call a "friend twice removed". One of those people who are a friend but you thankfully never see them. His wife left him and I leant him one of my many smart cars (the worst one) and now he keeps turning up and seeing if I want to meet up! Ugh! Totally agree with the new screen protector installer things. I used the LK-Direct one from Amazon on mine and the girlfriend's iPhone 14 pro and they were great. Only issue I found was, when I cracked the screen protector, I couldn't buy replacement screen protectors to fit inside the device. So I had to buy another device with the screen protectors included.

Cats love hiding mice in their mouths… mice aren’t so keen on it.
