The flashiest ‘Now Playing’ stand.

A short video this week about something utterly pointless, completely unnecessary and not exactly cheap.

So, right up my street.

https://youtu.be/a8OkyJf3J4U

Off screen there’s been a run of obligations, medical, dental, family, birthday (not mine) etc. These things have a habit of converging. As a result  I’ve only had the time to make this rather brief video offering.

A Patreon update video is overdue though, so I’ll get on with shooting that next. I fear it’s likely to get a bit too talky though as I haven’t managed to shoot any extras to break it up, bar documenting a couple of instant lunches. Perhaps I should aim to condense it down more than usual. We’ll see.

Anyway, I hope you’re doing well, take care and I should have another video for you very soon.

Yes, I agree. The following may be relevant: "Etsy's payment policy states the reasons for putting money on hold include a sudden increase in sales".

Meade

That's very odd. I did read an article recently about Etsy withholding payments from people on there which is causing a massive problem for self employed creators.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-66201042 Perhaps it's something to do with this.

Techmoan

I purchased the visualiser on Etsy and was notified yesterday that PetruWoodworks was no longer a seller. I contacted them on the Petru Design website to ask them if the order would still be fulfilled and was told that if I hadn't already opened a case and received a refund that the order was still valid and would be sent this week. They went on to say that they had been "hit hard by Etsy for no reason" which I take to mean they may have been kicked off the platform, but it would be good if they could at least explain to purchasers what has actually happened, which so far they haven't.

Meade

You'd definitely take a strong disliking to what's hidden out of sight at the back of my HiFi. Even a bomb disposal expert would shudder at the thought of it.

Techmoan

Yeah, watching the opening I remembered why I was a Patreon ;) Fantastic... I kind of like it. The price is a tad steep perhaps (but handmade), but cool none the less..

Bas van Schooten

Cool video! I appreciate you taking the time to make sure the display looks good on camera. Like others have said, this isn't for me, but I can imagine folks who would want one. I have to say, I'm a bit turned off by the shoddy 3d-printed covers on the side/back ports. Hopefully they get enough sales that they can improve quality later.

cstone

I like it, i loved the intro but the product isn't for me, hopefully others will buy it though. It's certainly something i'd look at in someone else's house and go "that's cool" though, i just don't want one myself. It's a bit like the lions at Trafalgar Square, i like them but i don't want one, i''ll happily go and look at them though.

Martipar

What a delightful opening. A really lovely product. I'm part of the 99.9%... but really enjoyed the review either way.

Andrew Shaw

Ooh, re-watched just now on my TV and I just noticed the LED cycling headphone head model behind you. That's fun.

Grace Robbins

No doubt influenced by this! https://static.miraheze.org/avidwiki/thumb/c/c7/ATV_%281969%2C_1st_Half%29.png/412px-ATV_%281969%2C_1st_Half%29.png

Brad Jones

Any issues are more than likely down to inappropriate storage of my record.

Techmoan

In the early 90s we sent a colleague to the local electrical & electronics retailer to but some fans. He came back with the fans and a Technics Graphic Equaliser with a display like you mentioned for himself as he was so taken by it.

Duncan

Mat really enjoyed the video. It is a real shame about the Planet X3 LP you demonstrated had serious wow and flutter. I hope Hans sees the video and tells the record pressing company to get their act together. Best wishes.

Nuts 'n' Proud

That is a very nice-looking visualiser indeed! Want! That Jazz Spastiks album cover ain't too bad either! 😊

Craig Lemon

You and me both - new, interesting things are very thin on the ground.

Techmoan

My birthday is coming up and I had been waiting for something a little spend-y and HiFi related to buy for myself; this fit the ticket, but I only wish you’d be earning a commission. I really appreciate your reviewing standards of quality for modern products, I only wish there were more items that met the mark. Thank you!

Callan Christensen

Thank you! I absolutely don't need this, but I want one 🤎 $200 is expensive. $200 with worldwide shipping included is cheap :) I like the Planet X3 promotion too !

CheeseParis

It's not cheap, but it looks beautifully made. This is going to sound like a weird description of an electronic device, but it comes across as something made by artisans. Under different life circumstances, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. I'm grateful it exists and that Mat brought it to people's attention. Here's hoping the people making these are still around when/if I'm in a position to buy one.

OzRetrocomp

Honestly the fact that it’s also sized for CDs sold me. Purchased. Thanks, man.

JC

Loved the intro, I too needed the laugh it gave. Nicely made product.

Gideon Jones-Davies

I think Light Dims were a family company too. Must order some more of those. The display on my Roberts Petite radio is dazzling even on the lowest brightness setting.

Brad Jones

The intro was one of the funniest things I've seen in long while, everything else was a bonus.

David Peaker

I have a strong feeling that the first (and last) place I saw one in the outside world was on the counter in Starbucks…back when they sold CDs.

Techmoan

I’m still hunting for a CD that I think I must have left in a player. Every time I find a device I haven’t checked and press eject, there’s a moment of hope followed by the dashing of that hope. I could buy it again, but where’s the fun in that.

Techmoan

Thank you, thank you, thank you ! I so needed the laugh the intro give me. It’s been a crap couple of days but you really put a smile on my face. the whole concept though what’s me to go off and replicate using my 3D printer and stock of Ardunio and leds

Rik Kershaw-Moore

Found it, thanks!

David Hulme

When the record isn’t on the stand that’s YouTube audio library music, most (possibly all) of it by Patrick Patrikos.

Techmoan

The song in the phone footage section - was that from planet x3 too? I couldn't find it

David Hulme

I loved the infomercial-like introduction :-) Thank you for the vid and take care!

ENP

Nice little video, Mat. Not a product for me, but at least I know all about it. :-) And don't panic over getting a new update video out, we all know your home situation.

Stephen Bell

I was ready to get one riiiiight up to the $200 price tag! YIKES! I am sorry, that’s not worth $200 bucks and I am shocked you didn’t comment on that fact as you have on other overpriced items in the past. Maybe my issue was i was too distracted by wanting to know more about the color changing head in the background with your headphones on it. When do we get to see more on that ? (Hopefully under $200 ;). )

chris cunningham

Indispensably useless!

Joseph Dougherty

Goddamn if I was working right now I would have bought this. Any crap tier visualizer is a hundred bucks now but this looks decent. And it holds your record upright like a pretentious douche. That's so me. I'm going to sleep on it. I can still afford it technically.

Funkmon

I'm sure the 'now playing' stand is a fairly recent thing? Never did it in the 70s/80s. Just either looked at the cover whilst listening or lay it on top of the turntable. Did anyone have a 'now playing' stand back in the day?

Robsa

I'd be interested in that as well. I would be a slightly disappointed if it turns out to be a small PCB with a non-descript epoxy blob.

Tunix

You should opt for the free one then.

Crispy AI

There was a 20% sale on Etsy earlier in the year so I paid £153 - that was top end for me…and I can ‘justify’ the purchase because it’ll make a video. So I completely understand.

Techmoan

I like it! But I wouldn't spend that much money on it :(

antzpantz

• This item is ideal for me - if my skull wasn't attached to my spine I would misplace it, I'm such a messy scatterbrain. • One record sleeve on this custom visualization holder is worth two on the Bush SRP41. • I am ashamed to admit I was very close to messaging you with concerns about your well being - I worry much more than is necessary. 🥹 • The humor displayed in this video is exactly what I needed, I ♡ it very much - in addition to the time-lapse unboxing and peel • Love the song from the Planet X3 album you played • For once your phone camera recorded something better than your equipment - odd. I also like the crispness of the LEDs in this thing. • I am one of the .9% who want this... but don't have cash. I really appreciate you showing it to us, I live vicariously through your interests that match mine. Sincerely, Take Care 🤍

Grace Robbins

I like the design, but a bit too expensive for an otherwise useless thing for me... But I always enjoy it when you show things like that, well, actually, once I bought something because you showed it ;-).

MrHammond

Surprisingly good. Normally I can pick them out straight away but I wasn't sure. Now I've started doing videos myself, I was thinking about getting famous people to say the channel name but now I wonder if there are AI voices coded to sound like famous people already.

evilution

A nice little plug-and-play Visualiser, super simple, can't really complain for what they where aiming to do in a pretty niche market. I'd be dying to crack open the spare one and see what they've got running those 'advanced algorithms' under the hood. If it's something off the shelf like an ESP or a standard micro-controller it might make a neat little hacking project for someone to extend the functionality and add more modes. USB-C is a nice touch, potentially you could even have it on a disguised battery bank and go for a totally clean look.

FluffStuff

Excellent intro👏

Gareth R

You just know some people won’t get the comedy. “This isn’t a big problem, why put it in a bush, when you can rest the record sleeve on any surface?”

Techmoan

The LaMetric is quite a bit more defused and duller. But it is getting on a bit now so you’d expect some improvement.

Techmoan

I think they’re in Lithuania. I’m not sure the bathroom is worth looking at - imagine a basic cruise ship or bargain hotel bathroom and you’re 90% there.

Techmoan

It looks well made and the display seems to be quite responsive (as far as I can tell from the video). I admire the simplicity of the device. No app, no WiFi, no weird setup process. Just plug it in and the fun can commence… Neat! As always, the presentation is well done. Just the right length and pace.

Tunix

No need to condense the patreon update videos more than really needed. Most people are here on patreon to hear you rambling anyways. Have a nice week!

Malte

Frequency sweep! I want to see a frequency sweep :) It looks to me to be capable of that. Great device, although a bit too pricey, even if it is hewn out of a solid block of wood. I like the bouncing squares one. I swear, watching this channel is costing me a fortune.

CBits Tech

I'm glad you found this product. I went to their website. Do you have any idea to their country of origin? I think it's neat that a Father & Son operation is trying their hand at ecommerce. My daughter is married to a guy who works for a similar operation in Cleveland, Ohio. Not quite a F&S, they have 6 employees, but they specialize in making retro/modern gaming gear accessories, like controller stands, customer game shells, etc. They're at https://rosecoloredgaming.com/. This isn't your cup of tea, but I think the approach to the website is similar. Thanks for the great video. Looking forward to your Patreon-only video. I know it might be an intrusion on your privacy, but could you show us a brief glimpse of the bathroom work results?

CrimsonPig808

I find the comedic value in the fact that it is dead-pan. Very funny intro sequence, btw.

CBits Tech

So true regarding things not flashing these days on Hi-Fi. Watching that Playing Now box responding to the music took me back to being much younger in the 80s/90s and a friend always had a graphic equalizer on their Hi-Fi, probably for no other reason than the display looked good. The hours we'd spend just mesmerised by it, we thought we were listening to the music but I'm not so sure we were now, it was probably the graphic equaliser bouncing up and down and watching the peaks hold then fall which was taking our attention.

Leigh

Those synthetic voices have gotten pretty good nowadays. They do, however seem to lack some of the comedic value from the older versions with their more robotic voice quality.

Mark Hesse

Are the LEDs not similar to those on the colour section of the LaMetric clock? You’re right they are pleasing on the eye…. And what a colour gamut!

Raymond Okoński

Then I am happy you are happy!

Mark Walsham

I'll take flat - I'm happy with that.

Techmoan

I don't mind extra talky updates! If some people complain that it's too talky, they can always use the technology at hand and skip around.

Michael J

Mat, lovely device as the LED’s look very much nicer than most on devices. One thing I did notice is your voice over sounded very flat via headphones. It is if you recorded it direct to the mic with no reverb at all. Sounded odd to me, but maybe it’s my old ears!!! Enjoyed this short and sweet video.

Mark Walsham

Yes - it's a Google one.

Techmoan

Is that an AI voice at the beginning?
