Dark Souls 2's DLC Ending: Explained!

Im getting scholar of the first sin soon. I havent yet played the DLC. I was wondering if you had a recommended order to play each DLC?

I agree and I believe that seath himself started this lineage throughout each cycle, a lineage of the beast that converts a great soul. Seaths soul becomes ineffable because he was given a part of Gwyns soul making him a Lord in return for his betrayal to the everlasting dragons. Like Freija, a beast who too covets a great soul, this repetition of fate in each cycle is an effect of the cause when a Beast was given a great soul. He was an imperfect dragon during their reign and sought power equal off is brothers. And then their was fire, and after the war and the union made between the King and the Pale Drake would exert influence over the land forever. So in mythology, seath being a Dragon who inherits a powerful Lord soul shard on top on his power of just being a dragon would make his soul, forever bonded in the union between the old two, a beacon always to draw mighty beasts to the incarnation of his soul in a cycle. And in my opinion, you the dark soul, are not excluded. There are, and will always be four Lord Souls, Light, life, death and Dark. But when stricken with the undead curse and a chosen undead who has be bequeathed with the Dark soul, you will again hunt the false legends of yore, those four endowed with immensely powerful souls. To conclude, you are one of the four Lords, but do not bear a great soul...yet. You conquer the the other three, including the fourth great dragon soul coveted by beasts. Then take the throne, the crowns, and seek strength- the strength granted to he who links the fire. Which I really hope they'll cover in First Sin, and would love to see an origins video for the whole dark souls universe including the first flame and the dragons, and their connections to dark (if any, just my assumption since they "were" before fire. And they do breath fire lol. Also the Dragon chime from the dark chasm). Can't wait to link the flame..

I agree with the idea that the natural state of humans is that of undeath. The reasoning being that in a world of fog that has no heat or cold, light or dark, no disparity in any way, everything is the same and eternal. What then is not life and not death? what is eternal? undeath. Now here's some fun speculation to go with that. I think the great souls are powered by the fire. With the fire blazing high, the great souls are full of power and thus Gwyn and the others are able to perform great feats of magic and power. But once the fire fades, all those powers start to wane. This would explain why you, a regular undead who has trouble killing one dragon let alone hundreds, are able to kill the owners of great souls and then harness them all. Furthermore, I think the souls want to go back to the first flame, where they originated. Every time you show up to the flame, to ignite or not, you have to have all 4 great souls with you. When the flame weakens, it calls them to it, This includes the dark soul, or the humanity, within you. I think ,since humanity is a very very weak portion of the dark soul, that when you die it flees your body to return to the flame, leaving a large round scar on you (The Dark sign) and making you undead, since you lack the dark soul to make you human. Also notice that the most of the undead humans are all hanging around drangleic, where the first flame is stored, where their humanity left them to go to. This goes with the idea that the firekeepers were telling you of walking without quite knowing why. You've lost something but you don't know exactly what. It's your own specific humanity tied to your specific soul. (Note in Dark souls 1: when you used humanity, then died. Well there was this nice convenient hole in your back for the humanity to leave through, thus you would go undead again.) On that note, I disagree with what everyone seems to think, that darkness will rule once the light goes away. Before light there wasn't darkness, but a grey fog. (Again, neither light nor dark) in this logic, the opposite of darkness is not light but the grey fog. So If darkness succeeds in extinguishing the ember that is the pure state of fire, then they to will disappear for darkness will be no more. It would also remove all the lord souls from the world as well, since they were born of fire. With it gone, they lack all power. Which includes the dark soul. Also, anyone else find it wierd that there were 4 great souls at the start, but after Gwyn gave a part of his soul to Seath, Seath's soul turned into an ineffable soul? Was Seath the first person to mess with the soul? Did Gwyn just give him a large portion, enough that it was it's own power? The world started with 4, but now there are 5 Great souls.

I tought the crown was an even bigger curse than the actual curse, considering that being free from insanity only leaves you with 2 options, linking the fire which kills you and restarts the cycle, or wait as the world decays into dust untill the fire dies and another undead kills you and takes the great souls to link the fire leaving you hollow and insane

Alexander van der Westhuizen

It'll never stop Next goal state recognition of that name! And yeah I bet your kangaroo subscribers are happy about that

Aeto

Your finished. You'll go hollow

Bronze-Gear

Ah dern 1 AM forum surfing *shakes fist*

Bronze-Gear

Hm, that's an interesting thought about the sinner. So many questions yet to be answered D:

VaatiVidya

So easy to forget, hey? I should have mentioned that personal freedom from hollowing might be truly an "ending". Maybe they gave us this power over hollowing to symbolise that the series is over, and there's nothing left to fight..

VaatiVidya

Good to know!

VaatiVidya

Yeah man, it's so easy to forget. Thanks for the kind words :D

VaatiVidya

From a gameplay perspective, going into NG+ nullifies the effects of the crowns..I was hoping it wouldn't - I was disappointed when the hags at the start laughed at me, haha.

VaatiVidya

Yeah, I'm very curious to see where the series goes from here. I do have a feeling we'll see three though..especially if they took the time to split the team.

VaatiVidya

I'm using GeDoSaTo, but the settings were a preset I downloaded from a random forum - I WISH i saved which forum it was from. Yeah, my initial response to the ending was terrible - I had very high hopes. After a little more consideration it struck me how it's subtle..but I would have preferred more.

VaatiVidya

Haha, you're very consistant with this Brandon thing D: I uploaded this one midday australia on saturday, which is pretty much..the worst time to upload something in terms of international viewing. I'm sure you weren't the only one affected..but..I bet australians appreciated it!

VaatiVidya

This game series is maybe the best one I have played, that being said the crown thing at the end was a bit of an odd choice, I hope either this means there will be another game, or that they leave it as is. To spend eternity as one solitary being free from the insanity, but always surrounded by it is the kind of fate I would imagine of this game, in the end no one get the end they desire after all. Also on a random side note as I am curious as to the opinions of others over this is, since the lord vessel is in the basement in majula, maybe it was the lost sinner herself who broke it, the skeletonss in there being something that drove her to lock herself away forever?

Clary

Great video again! Personally, I feel good about the ending. Just like you say, I had forgotten about my character and was only thinking about what the world of dark souls wanted from me, not what I was supposed to be getting from it. Also, Hollowing had plagued me so much (looking at you brume knight) that to me, freedom from Hollowing feels like the lifting of a great burden. I feel unexpectedly and greatly rewarded and vindicated.

Graham

another thought provoking video.

I completely forgot about the main character's story, how you started this video really blew my mind. What also blew my mind was your theory that the Lord Souls affect the land itself, I thought they just affected the holders. And finally what you said about use giving Shanalotte our souls made me laugh at how obvious it is that she is our queen! You sir are a true detective, where everyone else, including me, overlooks all the small seemingly unimportant things, you analyze every single word in the game and use them to interpret the hidden lore of Dark Souls, even the original Japanese translations!

Daniel Pawlick

Weird thought if the crowns prevent us from being affected by the negative effects of the curse and sitting on the throne of want causes "souls to flourish anew" at least until the flame fades again then if we wear the crown while taking the throne could it end the curse forever? At least in a way by preventing us from fading and thus the new age of fire? It's midnight here

Bronze-Gear

I would be extremely surprised if Dark Souls 3 was announced. Disregarding how difficult it would be to write new lore that ties in with the first two games and their DLC, I feel like FROM has squeezed most of what they could out of the series's formula. I enjoyed the Crowns trilogy, but at this point, I'm not sure how much more you could design in terms of enemies, weapons, spells, and items within the restraints of Dark Souls game mechanics. You would need to substantially change or remove them in order to achieve greater design flexibility and really try new things from a gameplay perspective, but Bloodborne is already doing that. For both that reason and the limited time release window you mentioned at the end of the video, I also don't expect any more DLC releases. As for what the DLC has left us, I'd have to agree with the general sentiment that it's fairly underwhelming. I suppose it could have been worse - the implications are interesting enough that you can spend thirteen minutes dissecting them, after all - but it doesn't feel like a satisfying conclusion to a journey that started in the poisoned remains of an underground city and ended in the flames of Chaos. Instead, we get a few more lines of dialogue from Vendrick (which is nice - dat voice) and also a gameplay bonus we really don't need (which is lame). I'm not especially upset given that I did enjoy the DLC overall, but I do wish FROM's B-team had put more effort into rewarding players that collected each crown.

Todd Brown

Cool video as usual Vaati and the particle effects were looking very nice. What settings were you using? Also I agree that the ending of the Crowns was sort of lacklustre. Yes they make the fight with Nashandra a bit easier because you can't get cursed anymore but her fight pattern doesn't change at all, and by the time you get the crowns their non-hollowing effect is virtually worthless from a gameplay perspective. They really only make sense if there is a greater challenge coming which I hope there is, cause theirs still no sign of Fallout 4 on the horizon.

Bronze-Gear

Okay Brandon we have to talk about your upload schedules EVERY TIME you upload something and I get the e-mail from Patreon I am just about to go to bed Its 4:15am here and now you make me stay awake longer! D: but in all seriousness though I am always happy when I get the email so yeah... pat yourself on the back.
