Such a underrated film

Yes, they were still in South Boston at the end there. You can see this monument in the background https://www.google.com/maps/place/Dorchester+Heights+Monument/@42.3324536,-71.0462637,269m/

great suggestions, thank you!!

Hi Camilla. Great reaction once again. I’ve been waiting for a while for this one. It’s such a great movie. I love it a lot. Anyways, I don’t have much to say except that and recommend a couple of movies that spring to mind. Another Matt Damon movie that I’m sure you’ve had recommended a quite a bit already, “The Departed”. It has a star studded cast and is a gritty crime thriller also set in Boston. Also, every time I see Minnie Driver I can’t help but be reminded of a movie called Grosse Pointe Blank. It stars John Cusack and Minnie and it’s a RomCom but not your typical RomCom. You’ll see what I mean really soon once you watch the movie. It’s a very good, very cute movie. Anyways, that’s all.

As you alluded to in your outro, nominated for 9 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actor (Matt Damon), Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress (Minnie Driver). Won Oscars for Best Screenplay (Matt Damon, Ben Affleck) and Best Supporting Actor (Robin Williams). You were sensitive/apprehensive (which is understandable) about Will lying about his past to Skylar -- that once she found out, she would not be able to trust him. But if you noticed, the movie really glosses over any consequences. Skylar seems to accept that he was not forthcomiing and loves him just the same.

Fantastic film, very moving even before the late great Robin Williams passing.

Yeah I agree, I could tell she was not fond of their behavior, but thats one of my favorite parts of the movie is the male friendships - it just feels so real and strong.

Camilla, so interesting to hear your initial hesitance of Will’s friends. I think I understand that initial take on them from what you were saying as the film went along and what changed your mind. Maybe some of it is a change in how male friendships worked in the mid ‘90’s versus now (I can only speak to my experience being about the same age as Will when the movie came out and having similar bonds during that time) but that group dynamic between guys was so spot on for male friendships, shared key characteristics of friends I still have, and I never doubted whether they were good for each other. The fight with Carmine and the line Sean gives to Gerry about the boys being loyal and not hesitant to put a bat to someone’s head are examples of that loyalty and brotherhood. Not saying you should agree, just really interesting to hear that perspective and it made me think so thanks! The way the movie so accurately depicts the consequences of being too afraid to let down walls, and being aggressively defensive of anyone trying to tear down those walls, is what keeps this such a personal and esteemed film for me. Glad you enjoyed it!

One of my favorite movies. Watched a zillion times. When I first watched the movie 25 years ago, I was taken by the loyalty among those 4 young guys. The more I watched the movie over the years, I graduated to other aspects. For instance, striking to me was the intensity that Sean physically confronted Will in their initial meeting when Will was saying shit about Sean's wife. Then, all the Sean monologues about his wife and relationships. Hard not to get teary-eyed watching the "it's not your fault" scene. And so forth. The dynamics of the Will/Chuckie friendship and the Sean/Professor friendship were interesting. Agree that Minnie Driver did great. The Robin Williams and Matt Damon acting is great. Also, Minnie Driver is awesome acting (and beautiful) in this. I liked Stellan Skarsgård in this, Chernobyl, and Andor. Enjoyed your reaction. I noticed you knew that the Professor is Stellan Skarsgård who is also Boris of the Chernobyl series you are reacting to. The bulk of the soundtrack is songs by Elliott Smith who was an American singer-songwriter known for his melancholic sound and personal lyrics. Sadly, he took his own life in 2003 at the age of 34.

My favorite movie! Sleep will just have to wait!

Happy Wednesday, Camilla. Good Will Hunting (1997) is one of my favorite Robin Williams movies, alongside Dead Poets Society (1989). My favorite part is when Will tells Clark "How do you like them apples!" when he slams Skylar's phone number on the glass outside of a Dunkin'. I just got this movie on Blu-ray, three weeks ago.
