Band of Brothers - Episode 9 - Full Length Reaction

Comments

What I love about his episode is that we've had the last seven episodes deal with the horrors of the war and then we get to this episode and its like "Oh yeah we also had THIS going on".

Robert Durant

This is such a hard episode to watch in many ways. If you haven't been to the Holocaust museum in DC, I recommend going if you get the chance, even if you feel you are well educated on the Holocaust. It is hard to describe the impact it has, but it has been 15 years since I went there and I still remember it well. In terms of what the towns people would know about the camp, the Nazis weren't able to keep the existence of the camps a complete secret to their own population due to the size and scope of the camps, as well as the fact that millions of German Jews had disappeared from their communities. But the nature of Nazi propaganda was that the public wasn't told about all the horrible things that were going on in the camps. Jews and many ethnic minorities had been labeled as criminals for a decade in Germany by this point and the public was told they were being sent to prisons or labor camps. Also, dissident voices against the Nazi's treatment of those minorities had largely been silenced (out of fear or by being arrested) by the time most of the camps got going. So some in the town might have known there was a camp of some kind out in the woods along the rail line, but they probably thought it was a PoW camp or a labor camp for "criminals".

I didn't hear your stomach growling. Hope you were able to fix you something to eat shortly after. Edward "Babe" Heffron: "If anyone ever tells you the Holocaust didn't happen, or that it wasn't as bad as they say, no, it was worse than they say. What we saw, what these Germans did, it was worse than you can possibly imagine." The Spielberg masterpiece "SCHINDLER'S LIST" (1993) is tough but important to watch. RT=98%. IMDb = 9. Metacritic = 95%. Nominated for 12 Oscars, won 7 Oscars including Best Picture. Hope you react to "The Pacific" (2010) (10 episodes) that is a companion piece to Band of Brothers. The same executive producers Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg.

It is probable that some of the townspeople knew what was happening at the camp. The soldiers guarding the camp would have been frequent visitors to the town and some of them would have talked about what was happening. Webb's yelling about the Germans having horses is interesting. Most Americans don't realize that only the American and British armies were fully motorized. All the other armies in Europe relied heavily on horses. The German army used over 2 million horses to move supplies, troops and artillery.
