Lily Learns to Wave

This month I decided to train my 12 year old sun conure Lily to wave! Something I'd never taught her and it's one of my favorite tricks to train because it can be so tricky to teach the smaller the bird you are working with.

If you are searching for more content on how to teach this trick that may not be included in this particular video, check out some of these other videos where I taught this trick to different birds that might offer different perspectives that apply more to your bird:

Yeah, I do think it would be too close... but you may find it works when you get it into the training! You never know. Bondi has similar cues for wave and shake. One is a full hand with 3 fingers bending and the other is a finger wiggling (so she can hang onto the finger to shake).

Love this series!! It is so helpful to see you start with a bird that doesn’t know the trick. I have taught my parrotlet Charlie to shake so I think I could now shape a wave pretty easily as he already can lift each foot for the shake. My cue for the shake is a finger like you’ve done here, but not wiggling. Do you think a finger wiggling for a cue for the wave be too close and confuse him or do you think it would be ok?

Awwww I love it

Thanks Jamie! I just got my Nigel (superb parrot) to wave in like 10 minutes.

You can send me a video if you want. Maybe I can help? πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

I have tried this with my conure dozens of times. My parrotlet picked it up real quick. I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong with my conure. . πŸ€”

Meanwhile here's Phoebe studying her sister very carefully to see if she can work out why Lily's getting all the extra treats...
