The anime doesn't really portray how much Subaru fell in love with Rem over the course of this arc. I'm gonna put some context from the LN just because it makes us rem fans feel a little better. Subaru leaned against the trunk of the Great Tree and took a deep breath. “I...love Emilia.” “Yes.” He revisited the words he had once exchanged with Rem. He knew that the words wounded her deeply, that they were words that made her suffer, yet Subaru spoke them once more. However- “But…” “But when you’re with me my heart trembles… Go ahead. You probably think I’m a terrible guy now.” ___ Putting their faces together, foreheads pushed onto each other they gazed at each other. Looking at Subaru’s treatments with love, their proximity being so close that their breathing could be felt by each other making Subaru uneasy. Naturally, Subaru became pulled towards her pink colored lips and he felt his heartbeat speeding up. --- The discussion of Rem being a second wife also happened after the white whale's defeat to which Subaru responded with, he'd have to ask Emilia if she was okay with it. It should also be noted that when he refers to his #1 and #2 in his heart, he is referring to the order of who he fell in love with, not a ranking.
