Yeah that promo shot Austin to the stratosphere. This might not have even happened without "Austin 3:16", but without this match, Austin doesn't have the badass aura that he has today. Both were extremely critical in launching Austin to the top of the business and saving the wwf from extinction during the Monday Night Wars.

Johnny Williams

I love that Bret gave school yard kids a better grasp of psychology than quite a few wrestlers in major promotions today have.

Adam Nelson

Vince McMahon was not happy about the blood lol

Christopher

Austin had done it before, but blood was banned at this time, and Brett was known for being willing to take the blame for such things.

Ian Hernandez

Without a doubt, my favorite WWE match of all time. What a glorious match for a fantastic feud.

Kidd Kingpin

Probably the most historically significant match you guys have watched. This match meant so much for the rise of Austin as the top guy, probably even more so than his Austin 3:16 promo, but then again this match wouldn't have happened without that promo, so maybe I'm wrong about that.

The brilliance of this match is the stuff that didn’t happen between the ropes. It was in the middle of the card with no belts and no stakes. It helped launch Austin to superstardom. I don’t think anyone said this but blood was banned at this time so Bret bladed Austin and I think Bret was happy to take the blame. It’s definitely one bladejob everyone agrees did wonders for this match. There’s a wonderful uncensored video (cursing galore) with Austin and Bret watching it back together and explaining things. https://youtu.be/Yg75_Jnxaoc?si=EZL6ht40FCvdeHI5 Enjoy!

I bet those guys could guess 20 different names each and not actually guess who was Austin's opponent on the Summerslam after his KOTR speech.

Jesse Ewiak

And, to clarify, Austin was bladed BY Bret in that match, since he had never done it before himself and was worried about it. Just goes to show how much of a ring general Bret truly was.

The first and only Mania I ever attended in person! I was a huge Bret Hart kiddo so I was supporting him all the way against the grumpy mean bald guy. Its fair to say my feelings have shifted over the years, but I still think Bret is the GOAT.

Yeah, Nattie is Bret Hart's niece. She's connected to WWE on both sides of her family though. Her dad, Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart, was Bret's long time tag-team partner before Bret went solo. Jim married Bret's sister, Ellie, and they had Nattie. The British Bulldog married another one of Bret's sisters, Diana. When Nattie debuted in WWE, she did along side her husband, TJ / Tyson Kidd, and her cousin, David Hart Smith (British Bulldog's son) as the Hart Dynasty. There was actually a PPV that took place in the Hart family's hometown called Canadian Stampede later that year that you can see a young Nattie on screen in. Her uncles Bret, Owen, and Bulldog teamed up with her dad as part of a 10 man tag match.

Ew lol but cool

I got you

Greatest double turn in the history of wrestling, the best Mania match ever behind maybe Taker/HBK at WrestleMania 26 for me

The proverbial crimson mask as J.R. would say. really added to the drama of the moment. The ref touched a rattlesnake and got bit lol.

Nicholas Kramer

You absolute legends. I mean all 4

My all-time second favourite match after Bret and Shawn's Iron Man Match from Wrestlemania 12. Wanna know how good Bret was? Even as kids in the schoolyard, we all knew that we couldn't just hit the sharpshooter on one another. We had to work the leg and break down our opponent first. Bret was perfect. Owen was his athletic superior. This current generation all wrestle like them. I've spent almost a decade living in Calgary. The Harts are royalty there. His sons even run a local indie called Dungeon Wrestling. Nick Aldis used to be the Stu Hart Heritage Champion before he signed with WWE.

City and Local

The big thing with this match and feud is that they accomplished a double turn. This feud started reversing their heel/face roles. By the time we get to the match Austin was the heel but had gained a lot of fan support. Bret was the face but was starting to get booed due to him constantly complaining. Coming out of this match their roles were reversed with Austin being the hero that didn’t give up and Bret being the sore winner. It was excellent storytelling done by the 2. This match/feud would help propel Austin up the card and to be the face of the company going forward.

Regarding the ring mat after the match, wrestling mats were not switched out between matches until the 2010s, and even then, only WWE and AEW do this. But many wrestlers have stated they miss the days of ring mats staying put for rhe whole show, as the collected sweat, baby oil, fragrances, and yes, even blood, produced a unique smell that became familiar and somewhat comforting. Stone Cold, in one of his podcasts, answered a fan's question regarding this topic and Austin almost sounded romantic about it, saying, "It smelled like WRESTLING."

Darth Ramious

Survivor series match between these two might be even better IN RING wise. Might be my next suggestion. And crazy how people think the Austin 3:16 promo “made” Austin. Oh hell no. This match/feud with Bret absolutely MADE him! 💯💯

Phillyman!!

One of my absolute Favourite WWE matches, hell, it might actually be my favourite, tied with Shawn vs Kurt. Bret and Austin are two of my favourites and the match is simply iconic. Austin in the sharpshooter pissing blood out his head is one of the best visuals in WWE history. Also an example of an all time great match on a all time bad show hehe
