The Honky Tonk Man was featured in WWE 2K24, as part of a DLC pack. I had him teach that ol' wannabe Gunther a thing or two and take back his spot as THE GREATEST INTER-CONTINENTAL CHAMPION OF ALL TIME!!!! OK, I didn't but, I did think about it. Also, here we saw R-Truth's twin brother K-Kwik. Just kidding again, it was him, during his K-Kwik era. Aside from a few hairstyle changes, the dude has looked pretty much exactly the same for like 25 years! I don't think he ages.

I’m sure y’all are familiar with a little wrestler named Gunther, well the record that he broke for the longest raining intercontinental champion was previously held by the Honky Tonk Man that you saw in this royal rumble. Don’t remember how and don’t feel like going back to check, but yeah, Rekishi got the number 30 spot ahead of time and that was well known, so the announcers weren’t just blowing the surprise. Vince put Drew Carey in the rumble because he was jealous of him trying to Riz up Trish Stratus backstage earlier in the show.

Haku fun fact! When he was 15, he was selected by a the King of Tonga to join a group of teenagers/young men that he was sending to Japan to study sumo. He had a positive in his first five tournaments. Then to redeem himself after running up a losing record in his 6th, he went 7-0 in the next tournament. He was later forced to retire after his stablemaster died and he was caught up with the other Togan members in an altercation with the new stablemaster. Afterwards, he was scouted by Tenryu and Ishikawa, two former Sumotori who had made the jump to pro wrestling, and was trained by Giant Baba to wrestle for AJPW under the name "Prince Tonga".

Kane’s run in this Rumble is my favorite Rumble performance of all time. He looks like an absolute monster. Lesnar’s performance in 2020 is my second favorite.

Curious how Josh and Tally liked the actual format of the Rumble. Interestingly, much like 2020, it was almost like 2 different Rumbles with the first half being the hardcore section.

Some not too spoilery notable notables - I'll never understand in kayfabe why the Hardys wouldn't work together and try to be the last 2 and then duke it out later. Kane and Taker figured it out! Right to Censor were a group of Attitude Era members who had to tone down their gimmicks. Val Venis the porn star, the Goodfather was the Godfather (who had the hoes). Can't explain Buchanan but he had nothing better to do. Faarooq (Ron Simmons) and Bradshaw were the Acolytes who became the APA (Acolyte Protection Agency). You of course know Bradshaw better as JBL (John "Bradshaw" Layfield) but he looks completely different so I don't blame you for not figuring that out. Albert is NXT head trainer Matt Bloom Scotty 2 Hotty was OVER and is known for doing the WORM, which Otis adopted as the Caterpillar. And yes, he was teammates with Grandmaster Sexay (Jerry Lawler's son!). They were known as Too Hot and then Too Cool. Triple H vs Kurt Angle was the WWE title match earlier in the show, alongside Chris Jericho vs Chris Benoit (IC title) and Dudleys vs Edge & Christian (tag titles). Edge was still a tag guy for now but would be a singles guy soon enough! Kane's 11 eliminations was a record that would last a decent amount of time, actually.

The greatest Rumble match ever. It’s booked perfectly. Triple H and Kurt Angle were actually in the WWF Championship match on this show while Booker T was in WCW. Also a little fun fact, they didn’t start hanging a WrestleMania sign in the arena until 2003 when they had a Mania XX sign in arenas as early as the Vengeance PPV in July. But every year since they’ve had the sign up from the Rumble on. Tally doing Jeff’s dance is so wholesome. Gangrel was also the third guy to rappel down to the cell during Taker vs Big Boss Man. You’d hear airhorns a lot back in this era. In 98 and 99 you’d see laser pointers too, mostly during Undertaker entrances where people would point it at his head. Perry Saturn has admitted in shoot interviews that he was high for his entire WWF run from 2000 to 2002 because he does not remember a damn thing he did there. In 2004 Saturn bravely defended a women who was being, let’s say accosted by two men and ended up getting shot in the back of the neck and shoulder. He’d become addicted to meth but and became homeless for two and a half years and disappearing from the public eye before reemerging clean. Steve Blackman, or as our friend from WrestlingBios calls him, Steve Mufuggin Blackman, was a legit bad ass martial artist who was bed ridden for two years with malaria and dysentery and spent another four years after that in physical therapy. Now he works as a bail bondsman. The Grand Master Sexay guy that was in this is the son of Jerry Lawler (A-Ha! Guy on commentary) and Honky Tonk Man is his cousin. The guitar is gimmicked by being shaved down on the inside or something to that effect. That guy Albert works in the Performance Centre now under his real name Matt Bloom. He’s the head trainer and has been for a decade in May.

A badass Texan with long jet black hair who is only known as a tag team guy. That’s who Bradshaw was. When he changed into JBL, a suit wearing, limousine riding, rich New Yorker, it was one of the most insane character transformations of the time and JBL very quickly became a main event player and world champion. He was also one of the most despicable heels. Mainly due to the racial places his storylines went. But the man definitely leveled up once he cut his hair.

The Honky Tonk Man is a legend in wrestling from the territory days. He wrestled in memphis a lot and was apart of the genesis of hardcore wrestling in America. In Tupelo business was not going good, their roster had been cut and they needed to make new stars quick. Jerry Jarrett I believe it was the booker just told them go out there and tear everything up. It was then known as the Tupelo Concession Stand Brawl and the segment gained infamy. The Japanese talent saw that and got inspired by that and started doing their thing in Japan. So basically an angle done to drum up business kicked off people thinking about wrestling in a whole new way.

Crazy how you go from wondering who Bradshaw is, to mentioning the Blue Meanie 😂 Bradshaw is JBL (John Bradshaw Layfield). The guy in the suit and cowboy hat who arrives to the ring in a limo with bull horns on the hood. And JBL beat the hell out of the Blue Meanie for real and for no reason in an ECW segment. Blue’s face was all bloody. It became a whole thing.
