I think the problem is that unlike every other heel that appears for a segment or two, the nature of being the lead announcer meant we were subjected to him the entire show. TLDR; he was too good at his job 🤣

Since Edge was forced to retire around this time had it not been for CM Punk I probably would have stopped watching completely. Watching Raw at this time at leas for me almost felt like a chore

He would rip on the show and its concept while also burying Daniel Bryan at every chance he got, calling him a vegan nerd weirdo that nobody should like. Cole would be heelish for the almost a year and a half after until Jerry Lawler suffered a very real heart attack on Raw. Cole would provide updates throughout the rest of the show which had no commentary, he’d be applauded by people everywhere for his handling of it and he’d turn face thereafter.

2025-01-07 21:16:33 +0000 UTCHonestly I remember the feud itself being actually decent. Miz was champion and Cole was basically his cheerleader on commentary. Lawler had never gotten the opportunity to challenge for the wwe championship in his career. He had a match with the Miz where Cole screwed him. Not to mention he had been playing this overly obnoxious heel on commentary for almost a year by this point, so everyone wanted to see someone knock him out. The feud itself got very personal and Cole did a good job at playing a heel. He even brought Lawler’s son back (Brian Christopher/Grand Master Sexay from too cool) to say he was a bad father and was never there for him. As bad as sounds it was probably one of the more heated feuds going into mania that year. But it should have just been a 2 min squash with Cole finally getting his comeuppance, not whatever this abomination ended up being. Yes the match was regarded as being bad at the time and wrestlemania 27 itself usually ranks among the worst wrestlemanias too.

As the chickenshit little heel Cole played his role perfectly. I sent in a Lawler Macho Man match a while back when he was younger In glad yall got to see him work when he was older. Lawler before he had bad health issues had a tradition of wrestling a match every year. You can go on youtube and see him wrestling in his older age. Theres some matches where he’s wrestling guys he used to wrestle in Memphis, and it’s cool to see that passage of time. He wrestles the match and he’s so good he doesn’t have to take a bump. He probably can’t do it now but that drop kick y’all saw him throw that’s really the only bump he’s taking in that one match. He did it also to prove that he can still nail a drop kick at his age.
