I've been playing a souls-like solo TTRPG called Rune. It's very much influenced by stuff like Elden Ring and it's been a great time. It's lethal, it has combat that makes you think and observe and wait for your moment. It has lore that lets you delve further into different areas and find secrets.
It has clicked for me in so many ways that the Dark Souls style of game always miss.
A while ago I had an idea for a Powered by the Apocalypse style game called CORE BLADE. The basic pitch: you pilot a mech with a sword through it. The sword acts as a heat sync. When you overheat, you draw the sword, hopefully defeat your enemies with it before you overheat.
The more time I spent with Rune the more I realized that it would be a better canvas for this sort of mech game. Fast combat where movement and positioning matter. Worlds that can be as big as you like, with areas that you can access when you have a certain item or have learned something about the world. Items that give you more options of playstyles.
It's exciting, especially when I can't stop thinking about mechs.
I miss Titanfall. it's probably one of my favourite FPS series. Incredibly satisfying combat, light touch world building, and a multiplayer mode that is honestly unmatched by anything I have experienced before or since. The idea that you could replicate that the way that Rune replicates the souls-like experience really excites me.
Hopefully I'll have more time for this at some point. But sometimes it's just fun to think about things.
