2024-12-05 22:09:07 +0000 UTCI'm sure someone more knowledgeable about the whole situation will chime in, but the short form is that since Rhodes isn't his real last name, WWE had the copyright on "Cody Rhodes" (despite his father using Rhodes as his ring name for a while) so he couldn't use it. They got around it to an extent with usually introducing them as Cody and Brandi Rhodes (which they did have the copyright for). Eventually, they made a deal in exchange for Cody and AEW dropping applications for a few other copyrights.

2024-12-05 22:07:49 +0000 UTCWWE owned the rights to the name 'Cody Rhodes', hence him having to drop the Rhodes part on the indies, new Japan, and early AEW. He ended up trading them a bunch of WCW trademarks that he'd registered to get the Rhodes part back. What was funny also is that Brandi would go by Brandi Rhodes: so together they'd be billed as 'Cody and Brandi Rhodes'. Fun way for him to keep using the trademark.
