I can see why you'd be inspired by him. Even being the "old man" here, he still put on an awesome match!

I didn't mention it while watching, but I really appreciated just having the crowd. Felt like we got to be part of the atmosphere.

And now I'm having second thoughts about the second short promo I'm planning on picking for December again. I have a couple from the Joe/Brock feud where Joe should have won the title on my shortlist.

Adam Nelson

That was awesome I'm glad someone suggested this. Joe has always been one of my favorites. Wish he would have had better booking in WWE after he left NXT. At least we got that Joe vs Roman vs Brock triple threat and that time he roasted half the roster on Smackdown

Drew Or Die

Absolute classic. I love Joe's cockiness in the beginning especially him stealing the moves of Kobashi's rivals. Kobashi's babyface fire works so well against Joe and in front of these fans. Joe does some great stooging for Kobashi as well and he has to use the ropes on most of the big near falls that Kobashi gets. The atmosphere helps this match so much as well, it will never be replicated. 100000% one of the greatest matches of all time. *****

Dagur Hall

One of my favorite matches of all time. Kobashi was past his prime but still firing on all cylinders and Joe was the best wrestler in the world in 2005 (Styles was a close second that year). The stars aligned and gave us this. Love it!

Kidd Kingpin

The fact that God himself thought he would be hated in America is hilarious. Glad you both enjoyed it. This is my favourite match of all time !

Michael Hay

Oh that would be a cool piece of history

Now I could be completely wrong here but i believe i heard it some where so someone correct me if i'm wrong. I believe this is the first match to involve a "this is awesome chant"

Glad y'all enjoyed! Kobashi is genuinely one of my inspirations for wrestling outside the normal spectrum This is him in his "old man that can take you to school and make you wish you were never born" phase However the man has been wrestling since 1989 so expect young Lion Kobashi in the future This match is very special to me Shows the respect a small crowd can have for legends and what they mean to the business Also those little shit kicks to the face Joe does that you'd never take Those are Kawada kicks They were named after an old friend and rival of Kobashi named Kawada Little bit of psychological warfare on Joe's part

Paul Watson

Waited for this suggestion. Was one of my first ROH shows I watched on DVD and I love the match. Looking forward for Samoa Joe to return to AEW TV soon.

This gets even more fun, if you know how much of a fan Joe is of these Puroresu guys, basically all of his Moveset are Japanese Wrestling tributes. Just in this match he did: Misawas flying Elbow, Otanis Facewash, Tenryus chop and punch corner combo, Kawadas Stretch Plum, two Nagata Locks, the Muscle buster, the STF and probably more I don't remember from the top of my head. This is also Kobashi in his later years, where he basically just chopped guys to death because his knees are multiple times operated at this point and merely held together by fighting Spirit :D And still he is able to have a barnburner like this. I am happy he did because this has a pretty big importance for the internet wrestling community. I'd say nearly everyones first Japanese wrestling match (before the rise of New Japan in the west 2015ish) was either this or Kobashi vs Misawa 03, it had and still has an important role as a "gateway drug" into japanese wrstling, Kings Road, the wrestling style of AJPW in the 90s and NOAH in the 2000s, espacially.

Didn't even notice there was no commentary until I read your comment

This match was seemingly called in the ring, because Samoa Joe said Kobashi insisted on working 1960s Japanese charicature villain heel up until he made his entrance. I remember seeing this as a kid on youtube with none of that context, and it was one of the first non-WWE or TNA matches I ever saw. There's also some story about how Kobashi started crying in the UK when a fan recognized him. He must have really wanted to wrestle in america, because he had been main eventing +60k crowds at this point.

.

There is nothing that gives me a bigger adrenaline rush than watching a match of this verity. Also, I love that this match has No Commentary, It just allows the match itself speak far more than any “what a move!” Could.
